What a brilliant true story. We hear so many of the negative stories about crime, but we don't hear so much about the heroism of the people who stand between us and the ones who try to hurt us. Parole has been a very hot topic here in Australia, too. I lean towards harsher punishment for violent offenders.

Douglas, this is an exceptional story and an exceptional piece of writing. I did laugh at the oxymoron...plastic silverware! I could also envision you all sitting in the jungle eating the steak and lobster.
I understand why Buitrago is important to you. Your commentary on the justice system is well done. Thank you for writing this tribute. Terry.

Sorry, I fell a little behind. I was in Salem-Winston, NC, reading this at the 30 year anniversary of Robert's death. That is why I promoted it a second time. Thank you for reviewing this.

Checking this out, as you mentioned on the forum.
You've not a thing to be nervous about!
This is honest, straight from the heart, and is a deeply personal tribute to your good friend and fellow Marine.
A few suggestions below ~ just because it's food for thought to consider.
Semper Fi indeed!
My dad, a Marine in WWII taught me early and often that one is never an "ex" Marine. One is forever a Marine~
Blessings to Robert Buitrago...and his friend who cared enough to remember him in this way!
"Buitrago was a marine's marine,"
Please capitalize Marine's Marine...
"and I can imagine, was very proud of the position. "
Rather than imagining, you might say, "by all accounts he served proudly"
"Rookie Officer Robert Buitrago died at the age of 23 with only 6 months on duty. "
Perhaps "after only six months on duty."
You'll do great!

I think this is an amazing tribute. You did great honor to your friend. I don't think you need to change a thing for your reading. I can only imagine being a family member and hearing this, they will be so honored!

My emotions were all over the place as I read this... sniff. You are a great story-teller and the story, though sad, was so inspiring. I like how you kept us hanging about "the woman" at the beginning and waited till the end to talk about her. Smart move. This was a heartfelt tribute to a special soul who died too young.

I am currently on my way to Winston Salem NC. for the anniversary of his death. I will be reading this to a roomful of people including his family. Any thing you think I should drop or change?
-
To be honest with you, no. I think it's perfect the way it is!
-
Also, safe travels...
-
Thanks! I was good to go until I got on the road for the ten hour drive then nerves hit me. Just want to say the right things to his family. Appreciate you!
-
I totally understand, but you will do just fine! I?ll be praying for you?
-
Thank you!

The saying, the best die young, certainly fits Buitrago. What on earth were those people thinking of, letting that murderer out only months into his ten year sentence? They should have been locked up! Your friend would be alive today had they had to serve his whole sentence. This is a lovely tribute to a man you knew and admired so long ago. It's nice to know he is remembered. Well done and good luck in the contest. Sandra xx

This is a well-written tribute to your Marine buddy Buitrago. Your story is told with clarity and enough details that I was able to meet your friend through the text. I love the fact you never forgot how important he was to the outcome of your life's path.
The visual fits perfectly. I am glad you used his actual photo as a cop.
Good luck in the contest. I voted for this entry.

You are most welcome. I enjoyed reading it. I have an Army Sgt. friend I served with in Frankfurt, 40 years ago. We never lost touch.

I have a feeling that you are one GREAT person to have as a friend.

Thanks, I try to be.

You provided an excellent description of Robert Buitrago, including his personality, quality of military service, and dedication to the Marine Corps. You also included enough information so the reader could understand the type of young man he was, and why he will always be important to you. This is a remarkable tribute, and I wish you the best in the contest.

What a touching story. Oh goodness, this story brings back to life many good thoughts for you, but also some bad. This tribute to your friend is a nice gesture of kindness.

Thank you. Probably a little too ?ugly? for a FS contest but my goal was to get people thinking about the price some people pay.

Wow! What a great tribute to one of the people who should be honored every day. Someone willing to stand up for what's right even if it costs him his life. Thanks for sharing. Wish I had a six.
