That does not sound like a fun trip. Not only was it a funeral, it was a much longer trip than anticipated. Waze does work well, I just forgot to use it the last time and used another one, that doesn't work so well.

Been there, done that, Mary. I am on the verge of throwing my cell phone in the lake. I would do it today, but the lake is frozen over. Come ice out, I'll see how I feel.

I couldn't help but laugh as I read this contest entry. I am sorry about that. I happen to get lost extremely easy and it is nice to know others have the same problem. Thank you for sharing and good luck with the contest.

I told my sister Cathy about my GPS adventure; (comma needed after 'sister')

I understand your rant. GPS directions is something that turns me into something less than human too. Once I passed the building where I was supposed to by a half a block. If I'd been sure it was just behind me I could have backed up and been there in less than a minute with a half hour to spare. The GPS reprogramed and sent me on ten mile journey in heavy traffic to turn me around. I got to the courthouse one minute after it had closed for the day. Another time, it took me to a garbage dump instead of the campsite and told me I'd arrived at my destination. I have many other horror stories. I enjoyed reading yours.

Beth, I love your stories. Thank you for the review. I never learn, the previous time, the GPS kept leading me to a sign ending the highway i wanted instead of at the beginning. It took me four times to pass the same building until I realized it!

This work has reached the exceptional level

This reminds me of a road trip I took with my family from Southern California to Missouri. We had one of the primitive GPS systems, I believe it was call TomTom or something like that. We should have arrived at our destination around 6pm, but because it was slow in telling when to turn right, we wound up having to backtrack several times and would up at our destination around 9pm instead. Needless to say we were pissed. So, yes I feel your pain.

Oh yeah. Familiar problems deserving of a rant as you have done. I've had similar problems with gps's in the past as well as the "volume is turned all the way down" problem you also encountered. Both can be very frustrating as you beautifully pointed out. Nice job of writing.

Hello Mary,
I loved your story. I was laughing as you went through the various stages of panic. How funny. I can say that, because it was you and not me going through it. I've had my issues with the GPS too. I use a GPS on the boat where it is really invaluable. I can mark obstructions and high spots, draw a line on the chart to go from point A to point B with an estimated time of arrival, and find my halibut gear in the fog. It's been a life saver more than once. I hate driving at night. I can't see well, the lights nowadays all seem like they are on high beam, even it they aren't, and as you mentioned, there is the inevitable tailgater. If they are in that big of a hurry to get in an accident, I let them go around me. Well done on your story gal. Thanks for sharing.
Tom

Thank you for your kind comments and review. I appreciate it. Hmm, maybe I would have better luck with getting around using a GPS on a boat! I would need a trailer to haul the boat, and someone to drive the car while I stand in the boat reading the GPS!

I have never had the misfortune of using one of those things. At seventy-eight, I don't drive any long distances anymore. It sounds like your trip was a nightmare. Best of luck in the contest.

I'm betting every reader can relate!!!!! Certainly, I can. Did you know your GPS can be set for fastest route, no highways, scenic, whatever you choose?? I discovered this marvelous feature sometime ago when I happened to be going somewhere that I knew the route. For some reason, I hit the GPS anyway and discovered it was taking me the long way. My granddaughter suggested that I examine my options -- found that wonder ful 'fastest route' feature!!! Great story. Good luck in the contest. ann

Thank you, Ann, I had no idea that I could set the GPS. Now I am interested in using it again. I have a trip to Cambridge coming up. It is a half hour drive or if I do not figure out my GPS - 2 Hours.
    Thank you again.

Who among us hasn't sworn at their GPS? I had more trouble with the old, clunky Garmins that we used originally; I find that my phone is pretty accurate - thank goodness because I can get lost in my own neighborhood.

This is a great story - full of both grief and humor. Thank you for sharing your rant with us:-)
