Thank goodness for the internet, which is where we get all our information these days and this has helped you understand the behaviour of cats. Glad the cats and learning their trade from their Dad, much enjoyed Debi, love Dolly x

    Hi Dolly,
Thank you for the encouraging review. Yes, between Siri and Google the poor old encyclopedia has bit the dust.
I was happy to find that the daddy cat was eager to fulfill his parental duties.

A lovely story, and I do admire the persistence of the male cat to check on his little ones and to teach them their roles. Between them, they are doing a good job in keeping the rodents at bay. Nice one. I do love animal stories which showcase their fine wqualities.

    Hi Wendy,
Thank you for stopping by to review and to share your insights. It was a surprise to find him being so dedicated since I was brought up to believe tomcats were dangerous to kittens. I am so glad he is a dedicated father.

Depending on the cat is how they take care of their young, jealous cats will kill some offspring, others are good parents.
Nature is funny that way. Animals also know who they can trust too.

Six stars from me and on behalf of DC and other cats, male and female who care for their progeny with dedicated love.

You wrote this beautifully with touches of humour and drama that kept the reader entertained and focused.

Cats can make an awful racket during mating season but it seems DC is more of a cool cat! LOL

Thanks for sharing

Blessings Julia

    Hi Julia,
Thank you so much for the six stars and for your gracious comments about the writing. I appreciate your comments about cats, too.
Yes, I remember the racket when the parents were mating. I'm not sure if the mother cat was Manx or not . She was around for about a year or so, but I never saw more than a blur of fur. She'd take off every time I saw her, usually for the barn or woodshed. Thank goodness for daddy cat being so responsible.

Very nicely written. Good work.
I am very happy with outdoor cats. (Notice I didn't say 'love'.)
They serve a very useful purpose. And I don't even mind feeding them once in a while, when it appears hunting has been slim pickings.
Inside cats is another tune, one without much harmony, I'm afraid.
Best wishes.

    Hi Wayne Fowler,
I like having the cats around since I have horses. Hay seems to attract rodents so having outside cats is good.
Thank you for the kind review and the insights.

This was such a sweet story! I am glad D.C. took up with his kittens even though you tried to discourage him at first. Thank you for sharing your story, and best wishes to you.

    Hi jessizero,
I appreciate the encouraging comments. D.C. has been a great father. Who knew a male cat would be so dedicated.

I've heard the same stories but there are exceptions to every rule. My neutered male cat, Grey, brought home a very pregnant female one day. She was pretty wild but she stayed and had her kittens under the porch. Some of the tomcats tried to get to the kittens and Grey chased them off, keeping the babies safe. He was a terrific cat.

    Hi Mary Shifman,
Thank you for sharing your story about Grey. He sounds like a terrific cat, protecting that female and her kittens. You've got to love such a wonderful cat.

-Nice image and story to go with it, Debi.
-Thanks or the note about DC, too.
-You have a very good opening hook.
-There is a lot of good, descriptive detail, even going back to two years ago, and now in the present time, he arrives at sunset. We could say he is a very punctual cat, and he took his role as father seriously, even though there were some doubts about that.
-It must have been gratifying to see the kittens proudly following him and touching noses.
-I like the paragraph you begin with a question, and explain that your attitude toward DC had changed.
-He was passing on valuable skills to his offspring.
-I like your line about the mice sitting up and waving as you entered the barn! Nice touch of humor.
-A very good conclusion to the story. Thanks for sharing it; I enjoyed reading it.

    Hi Pam,
Thank you for the detailed comments about the writing. I wondered about the opening line so I'm glad you found it to be a good hook. You take such care in each review. I really appreciate it.
This was my first attempt at a short piece, all do to your suggestions. Thank you!

You are very welcome, Debi, and I appreciate your reply. I am glad you liked the suggestions. DC would be happy, too. Maybe you've got another character in the making. He and the kittens will be mesmerized by Piper's magical flute🎼🎼

Late in the week, and I am out of sixes. I love your story. For over forty years, I was 'Cat Daddy' to seven cats, two males, and five females over those years. My duties were different than those of D.C. They were more custodial in nature. I never knew this about the male cat. Thank you for writing the story. Well done. Terry.

    Hi Terry,
Thank you for the vitural six. You brightened my day with the stars and your comments. This was my first attempt at a short piece so I am happy to hear it worked.
It sounds like you are a good Cat Daddy.
I've been a dog person so these kittens and D.C. are teaching me a lot.
