When are the actual shooters going to get the blame instead of everything else?

A 20 year old is certainly old enough to be held accountable for his actions even if he did not have life handed to him on a silver serving dish. Many do not and never become school shooters.

Agree there are various areas that need addressing everywhere a person looks. this includes the violence these kids grow up with in their music, movies, video games, and other arenas.

But, until such time as school shooters are held responsible for their callous, cowardly, acts nothing will change.

Not much will probably happen to that six year old, but some sort of consequences should in order that perhaps, when he is older, he will not commit even more violent deeds.

Since I don't watch the news, I am unaware of this. Is it in every state? Or (said sarcastically) maybe only those where they have the right to carry concealed weapons? My little rant. Rant begets rant. "a parent or grandparent accompanies him to school each day," I'm not so sure, as a teacher, I would want a parent in my classroom. A great topic.

I'm sick of saying this, that if one can't get a gun, how in God's earth can they shoot someone? Any and all the other measures are so complex and expensive that they would only have minimal affect. My country banned guns in 1996, not one mass shooting since, there were many thousands of guns surrendered. But good luck, blessings Roy

Well in the USA someone can always get a gun, unfortunately. What country are you from? Thank you for reading and reviewing. I appreciate the many stars. Have a blessed day.

I agreed with the seriousness of your rant, Eliz.
You tackled a vital problem that is so complex
with finding a solution. Your facts and comments
were well organized. It's difficult to understand
school shootings, the assailants, and the reactions
of the gov't.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes in the contest, Jan

Thank you for sharing, Elizabeth. Unfortunately, this new bill, if it's passed, would open the door to a parent being prosecuted for any crime their child or even a close relative would commit.

Have you ever heard of the Katherine Messenger story? It's a sad one and in a day when parents were hauled off to jail to pay for their children's crimes and relative's debts. Each person must answer for their own crimes and actions before God. Every person will stand before God someday and no one else will be there. How much more are the laws of jurisprudence based on this truth? The judge presides, and guilty one has an advocate to represent him/ her for their crimes and the evidence is brought forth in a court of law.

How would you feel if your child committed murder? Wouldn't that be the worst thing you could imagine? I know it would for me.

I visited my father in a penitentiary. Don't wish for another's crimes to be passed off to the innocent.

This statement needs clarity: First, here is some good news: the US House of Representatives has passed a bill to allow parents to be held accountable for school shootings.

The parents of whom is to be held accountable for?? Make it clear what the parents are being held accountable for: Their child's illegal possession of a firearm? Second-degree murder? premeditated murder? manslaughter? All of the above?

First, here is some good news: the US House of Representatives has passed a bill to allow parents to be held accountable if their (child) has been proven in court to have committed a crime using a firearm.

Does a knife or broken bottle count, because those happen too. Just curious how far this will go if passed. Personally, it's unconstitutional at best because it's laying the blame, penalty, and prison time on the parents, because they're not satisfied with a penalty on the minor child or youth.

No good will come of this. Don't wish for this bill to pass.

Sally

Great rant. I totally agree. This issue is much broader than simply tightening laws relating to gun posession, storage and licensing.

You were spot on with your phrase "...bandaid on the gushing artery..."

Well done for having a rant and speaking out.

Excellent subject to rant about.
Well written piece.
You state that "Then some law is passed, tighter background checks and increased age to get a permit." - But the "bandaid" you mention is only that. It might as well have been nothing at all after the Republicans (supported by the NRA) watered it down. We need universal background checks including gun shows and private sales. Red flag laws and the other things you mention. All with real teeth behind them.
Thank you for giving voice to the issue.

I agree with everything you've said here. Stricter gun control laws are not enough, thought it would be a good starting point. Take assault rifles of the public market. Anyway, things need to change soon because public shootings are becoming more common every day.

A poignant rant as the shootings in schools is becoming somewhat of a regularly occurrence and something has to be done about it. A six year old shooting his teacher is totally shocking and as you say here, how did he get hold of a gun? I agree with your rant here and I wish you luck with the contest, love Dolly x

Actually, scientific studies have proven the human brain doesn't start maturing until around the age of 27. So, in a society where child practically raise themselves starting at an early age, we just ask for trouble. Thanks for sharing.
