We've all had those reviews, I believe, the ones that leave us wondering if they actually read what we wrote. There is one person here who posts the exact same review every single time, and you know he is doing it for the member dollars only. The last time he reviewed something I wrote, I cut and pasted his words into a review of HIS work. I haven't heard from him since.
I have a small group that I follow and who follow me - they read my work always and I trust them to give me honest opinions. As far as the "ins and outs" of reviewing, below every review box are instructions on how to do this.
I have found that you are always open to suggestions that I make to improve your presentation - it's usually font size or style if it's hard to read.
It's amazing to me how you can construct a rhyming poem for whatever the occasion:-) I appreciate you speaking your mind here.

I have been lucky with reviewers, mostly the people here are helpful and kind. I have learned so much being on this site and the majority of people here have such great knowledge about poetry and writing. My poetry has improved so much because of Fanstory. A poignant post, love Dolly x

Very much enjoyed this post when you ask a relevant question. There are ways and means to figure it out though as I'm sure you know. Having said that, This poem is very well written! The rhyming scheme is quite good and the poem flows quite well. A message in your poem is also well received and makes a good point. We need to pay attention to what we're writing it. Is putting their heart and soul into what they're writing.
I like the picture too by the way hope you're having a great evening and good luck!

Many times I'll start to read a post (especially a poem) and the topic or words used are way over my head and I truly have no clue what's said, I stop reading and move on (I'm a simpleton when it comes to hundred dollar words).
Thise reviewers know who they are! I hope they read your well thought out poem and take heed... we're onto you!

Great job, Debi!! And you're so brave to promote so high that you could get bad reviewers who only want the payout not to read and enjoy your work. I especially liked "You're not fooling anyone, smug cannot be debated"!

After hearing of the situation I spoke of in my notes, I needed to promote high enough to get the message across, and yet hoped there was a little bit of humor that could keep them from getting defensive, thus not doing any good at all. Thanks Hon, and doubt this was one I would have ever written for myself alone, but I felt the friendship bear come out today and knew I could help a hurting friend. I do know that feeling and those kinds of reviewers do not do anyone any good, nor does any scenario of tearing someone down. Thanks Helen, now I can go to bed, but needed to do this and hope it will help our friend.
By the way, today I see the eye surgeons and will let you know how it goes.

(Well...because it wasn't a poem, maybe?)
Often new members read the guidelines for reviewing and proceed to award three stars or four stars
It's in the guidelines, and they are following what they read ...and yet 99% of reviews are five or six stars!
The rating system seems to have lost all meaning...
I wish we could review without stars.
Courtesy is essential, I agree!
I appreciate when a fellow writer catches one of my infamous typos!
(I'm not so fond of the snarky remarks...no need to be rude.)
Oh well. We have writers and reviewers of many levels...
I try to not argue, ever. A simple "Thanks for reading" gets me through the tough ones!
(Even when it's clear the "read" was merely a "skim through" at best!)
If I'm genuinely stumped on something I read I pass it by.
Why, I wonder, do some give one star reviews and say "I didn't get this?"
How is that helpful?
Honestly, I think most do their best...
When they know better, they do better...
Or so we all hope!

Lol, but dang it lady, what do you think of my poem? You must have some reaction to what kind of job I did. Or am I digging myself into a hole...hahahah! Just teasing you sweetie. I can't even fake that kind of arrogance without laughing at myself. Thanks for taking the time to read, because just as the sun rises and sets, I always know that about you; you do read it.

OH my. Am I one of the bad reviewers you're referring to? (Could be!)--
Truth is, my first reaction, always is to comment on how well the author connected and engaged me...
Clearly, you did that!
I don't always go into rhyme schemes, meter, alliteration, etc...
Yikes. Maybe I should? Let me know via PM, please!
(When/if I find a glaring error, I actually often PM the author, rather than calling them out in public...)
If it's a simple typo or one syllable off or something I try to mention it "sandwiched" in between good comments.
I will try to better acknowledge what I think of your poem, Debi...(I'm laughing here)---
You can be sure if I was so thoroughly engaged as to spend this amount of time responding, that I thought it was great...but your point is well taken. I should have stated that,
SO, I loved your poem!
(Egads! -- I am just realizing perhaps my reviews are seriously lacking!)
I will say I have NEVER reviewed ANYTHING on this site without reading it.
NO amount of member dollars is worth the lack of integrity.

I could tell some horror stories about what one person said to me at different times. I did not mute the person as I knew there were mental health issues involved. But I wish people would review the quality of the writing and be helpful and respectful. Many reviews are not reviews but simply responses. Although I do enjoy the conversations that develop! Many are thoughtful and thought-provoking, and show they have thought about the issue or theme, at least. Hope your piece will be read and noted, particularly by those who collect the cash, but either haven't read the piece or just leave some pasted nonsense words or sentences.
