My pastor talked about smartphones as "time-wasters" today. I can see his point. You wrote a very interesting story that is really quite sad. Thank you for sharing, and best wishes to you.

Yeah, it may become the only option, but how dangerous is that for our future generations. I do fear for our world as it stands at the moment.. it's just not right. Thanks for sharing this story, Jessica. Ulla:)))

Jessica, you have nailed it with this one! This shows how much so many youngsters rely on their cell phones or ipads as they call them now. I have never relied on my cell phone for anything but to make and receive calls. But too many use them constantly and I am afraid it is getting worse rather than better!
Keep writing and I hope you win this contest!

Jesse, thank you for your exceptional rating and awesome review! This very real issue is hindering the minds of our children, therefore, our future. It's very concerning!
    Thank you so much!

I agree! Our children need to get over their dependence on technology, such as cell phones!

"Spot on," Jessica!
And how incredibly tragic.
Yes, not only children, but a huge percentage of adults, are tied to their smartphones and/or iPads. They would rather be engaged in this manner than with face-to-face interactions. Did I mention how tragic this is?
And this situation is becoming increasingly tolerated and/or "acceptable."
I taught high school sociology for years. You cannot imagine that angst of my students when I conducted an experiment of their having to enter our classroom and relinquish their phones for an entire class period. The angst! The panic! "How unfair," and yet, phones were supposedly NOT allowed in classrooms!

A powerful and meaningful work of "fiction," or should I say, "non-fiction?"

Thank you for sharing!

    Well said, Diane!

You've perfectly captured the my thoughts on this matter.

It's astonishing how parents, especially those with young children, are so accepting of the situation. It's either they're too tolerant or ...just plain lazy. My daughters are in elementary school, and while they have iPads, my husband and I have rules that are not commonly followed by other parents. Our parenting style is dubbed as "old school" or too strict even by our friends. Most of their kids already have cell phones at this age and are free to use them as they please. But I'm just happy my girls enjoy reading books and still play outside!! One day, they'll appreciate the value of these activities.

Bless your heart for teaching, Diane. I must admit, I don't think I have what it takes. I can only imagine how frustrating this situation could have been!

Yep! This is so true of kids today and so frightening. I don't know where it will all end. I really enjoyed your little story. Great punchline. I never would have guessed. I wish you lots of luck in the competition. Best wishes. Jen.

I understand completely. I remember talking my lips off with my two best friends, or sometimes we'd just listen to records and be. A delightful flash for the contest, Jess!

Sending you my best today as always, and my very best wishes in the vote.

Heh heh, that's the sort of friend that anyone can buy. My best friend, (at least on the Earth) is sleeping beside me. But this is brilliantly humorous and deserves to be a great contender in this prize, well done, good luck, blessings Roy

Now how did I miss this. I really do try hard not to, (except I can't keep up with the April's one a day) I was so loving this seemingly normal, fun afternoon with a friend, and outing that could put a sweet child to sleep, and then you dropped the bomb. (We must TRULY be related that we both love that twist at the end)

However, as brilliant as it was and the fact that you even fooled the fooler, is pretty amazing, but it was crushing and made me feel a little ill too. Point well made my sweet Jess. Awesome job, because by doing the little shock treatment here, you made it easier for moms and grandmas to say, let's go do something with real kids and make some friends. Let's get worn out by fresh air and healthy friendships, not cyber-gal pals or innocent games that take too much of your time. Did I mention, this is so six star worthy and I will make the effort to watch a little closer, my dear cyber-buddy!! (with a big smile and bigger hug) BRILLIANTLY DONE!!

This is a well written story in 75 words that allows the reader to reflect on how society is turning - especially for young minds. This is unfortunately going to be a big issue if parents do not step up to the plate. Technology addiction in the household is a big negative. I like that this is a topical story on life presently.

Thank you so much for your feedback and wise words- you are exactly right! So many parents are lacking the extra effort necessary to do right by these kids.
