I've read that AI will take over so many jobs and that's sad. The unemployed population will become even more restless. Will history rewrite itself to make us feel more comfortable with lies? The elephant in the room is right. I'm going to bring this subject up next time I dine with my son and his family.

I believe you are right, Jesse. I can see some good but a great deal of harm coming from this technology. There is such potential for abuse and brainwashing like we've already seen with things like social media, that I'm not sure it will be good for mankind. Kids are already using it to cheat by having things like ChatGPT write papers and poetry for them.

I'm just not sure where society will be going with this, but I'm afraid of it as it seems you are too. JIm

Wow, Jesse, what a great thought provoking commentary. Not too long ago, I wrote a poem about artificial intelligence (AI). You are right. AI came from our minds, as many other dangerous inventions. You should watch a movie called, Megan.

Your goal to be able body and the things you want to do are excellent. Good luck.

Great job.

I am not too fond of AI either. I can relate to your words. I long for the old days when we didn't have all this technology and computers did not rule. Living in the woods sounds refreshing.

Wow! I've rarely heard you as impassioned/angry as you are in this commentary.

Let me start with the first line and say I love that your first word is "when," not "if." I've always said that your attitude will make this a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I fully agree with you that AI -- and, in fact, electronics in general -- are taking too large a place in our lives. While I fully appreciate Alexa or Siri telling me the weather, or playing a song, you couldn't pay me enough to let AI do my writing or thinking for me. Just as muscles atrophy from lack of use, I fully believe brain cells do as well, so I definitely try to exercise mine regularly.

I suspect AI is the elephant in the room only because certain other important issues, like the upcoming election, gun control and abortion rights, have spoken louder and taken precedence. If you think about it, though, the fact that there is so much discussion/argument about those issues suggests people are using their minds, thinking for themselves (with or without the help of network news and social media), and forming opinions. So, perhaps, we're not as far gone as you fear.

    Good morning, Michele.
Let me start by saying impassioned, yes, angry, no. I have no anger to share about this topic. Only the feeling that we need to start discussions and conversations about AI now before it is too late.
I waited to answer this review because I wanted to say the right thing to you.
I know we haven't shared our feelings about this issue and I don't want to step on toes or anything like that.
Please understand the elephant in the room is only the beginning of what is to come. I believe it will come soon as no longer a choice for us as it is right now and I want everybody to realize the effect it will have on their lives.
So, we are not as far gone yet but soon it will overtake everything we do and say!
I hope you don't get upset and disappointed with me. I mean you no harm.
Only that we discuss it further.

I won't get upset over honest, open conversation, whether or not we share the same opinion.

I do think that AI, and electronics in general, are becoming too all-consuming. On the other hand, I don't see us reaching the HAL in "2001: A Space Odyssey" or "The Stepford Wives" any time soon. I do think we need to rely less heavily on electronics, though.

Have you ever seen the animated movie "Wall-Y"? It's most comedic moments are also its most scary, showing what happens to people when they stop doing things for themselves.

As long as we have a choice in the usage of artificial intelligence we are safe, it is when we have no choice in the matter, that we have a problem.
Hopefully, we will always have a choice!
Thanks for the open discussion on the topic. I appreciate your honesty and integrity. You are a good friend!

Thank you on all counts! Let's face it, we'll have choice as long as we choose to take it. For instance, I've chosen not to live my life on social media. I have a Facebook account I use to see pictures of family and friends, yet I don't post anything myself, because I want my private life to be private. I will pass on a few funny (and not offensively so) things I see on Facebook, because people need to laugh, and I'll offer birthday or anniversary wishes, but that's the extent of my Facebook interaction. I have many friends who live their lives on Facebook and, while I'm happy to see they're doing well, I really have no desire whatsoever to see what they ate for dinner last night!

When it comes to choice, I hope you are right. I don't go on social media, either.
I am glad we agree on that.
Let's hope we always have a choice.

I?d like to think we?ll always have choice. However, if the trend to suppress voters? rights continues, and if we ever do reach a point where we have little to no say in who runs our government, Canada will have a new resident!
reply by the author on 20-May-2023
I am hopeful there will always be a solution. Canada sounds good if there isn't one.
reply by Michele Harber on 20-May-2023
    I agree, on both counts!

This is a very interesting thought reflection shared. The elephant in the room is a good analogy. Man thinks they can evolve themselves but they look in the wrong place. AI to think for us instead of us thinking for ourselves to know what is right and what is love. What next? Where will it end? I suppose I should be thankful that I won't be around by then - but my grandchildren will!

Yes. Evolving takes determination and thinking outside the box. This is why I wanted to open the conversation and encourage us to ponder what AI can and cannot do for us.
Our grandchildren and their grandchildren after them will thank us for thinking about this before it is too late.

You wrote a very good piece about this current phenomenon, Jesse. I don't buy in to AI and don't think it's a good idea. A simple example is looking for pictures to go with a poem. I use pixabay a lot so I was browsing through them and found an interesting one. Come to find out, the person sharing images was using AI. Doesn't sound creative to me.

You have a bit of Thoreau's philosophy in your essay. He said it pretty well, "simplify, simplify, simplify. Your idea of going into nature reflects that philosophy and what Thoreau tried to do.
There are so many issues in the world today, and it would be nice to find resolutions to all of them, but it is a complicated process and sadly, often bigger than we are.

Thanks for giving us something to think about and share on FanStory. You did a good job.

I agree, Pam. AI is not a good idea and we need to find solutions to the current usage of it and the plentiful things that only add to our convenience. That is what the problem is with our culture today. Too many conveniences and not enough hard work and determination involved.
    I appreciate your kind comments.
I hope I have brought up the conversation with those of us on FS so that we can find solutions.

Excellent, and very well said, AI is man's creation so logically we should be able to control it though this does not seem to be happening, I am not sure about giving up all life's comforts but weeding out what we don't want to be involved with would be a wonderful start, very well written****kahpot

I've actually heard several podcasts in the last few months in which they talk about AI, and it's pretty freaking scary! Some of the early pioneers of AI are now speaking out against it, saying we need to slow it down immediately. Problem is, the cat's out of the bag and no one is going to be able to put it back in again, I fear.

We all need to be very careful with our computer and phone use.

An interesting and thought-provoking topic to take on, Jesse.

Pam

Yes, Pam! We all need to be careful with the cat out of the bag as we choose carefully to get out of the way of the elephant in the room.
I fear you are right we need to be careful with our computers and our cell phones.
Otherwise, the cat will take us over and it will be the beginning of the end for us.
Thank you for your insightful review.
I hope the conversations will begin now.

Thanks, Mike, for reviewing this essay on The Elephant in the Room.
It is scary, and it is coming whether we like it or not!
And yes, it will be a blessing and a curse.
