Hi MariVal,
searched backwards to find this tanka poem... I knew I read it, but my own chains have held me captive, not allowing me to revisit until now.

So, yes, I relate to this poem like a kindred soul. The thoughts and memories flashing in full colour. When one goes through life as a bit of a loner, they tend to attract the same... what my auntie named... 'lame ducks' to their flock, and for me this is so true. I found more comfort in knowing and associating with these folk... we were all damaged goods and that was enough. Some you help, some can't be, some don't want to be... and really, even one's desire to give your all to save a soul is tainted because we ourselves are damaged. Maybe our true desire belongs in trying to earn salvation through empathy?

No matter the reason, life is life and the journey is about growth. We all walk the path we choose to follow, it may not seem to be that way through the darkness that consumes, but even there I have found the greatest value.

One thing's for sure, no matter what path, the road converges and leads us all to the same destiny.

Powerful in every sense of the word. It sat hard against my heart and soul!

With our thoughts we create...
reasons why.

Warm regards,
James.

Wow, you continue to amaze me with your insightful reviews.... it's like you get into my mind and know exactly what I was feeling when I wrote it. As my kindred spirit, you know how it feels when you want to fix someone you love or care about. The only person we can improve is ourselves. I agree with you, our genuine desire belongs in trying to save ourselves in the process. Does it work? It obviously hasn't worked for me, but I am trying.

Have an awesome evening or morning :)

I do believe that almost all people are drug down by our past chains. I can't believe anybody has escaped this. I think it's how we handle those chains that's the key. Unfortunately, I think they have a habit of reappearing every so often. Thank you for sharing this beautiful poem with us.

That is the difficult thing about people being attracted to someone with a similar pain and wanting to help heal. But instead people end up increasing each other's problems in codependency. Well expressed in your tanka!

Another fine poem, Gypsy----ah, those pesky chains of of the past. Call me Jacob Marley---my chains of the past threaten to hang me. I'm the world's guiltiest guy

The picture showed a beautiful young lady that was chained to a block, Gypsy. Your words were strong. I read your narrative notes and she was abducted by a pack of demons and treated as a slave. Her unwavering faith didn't save her. She died as a slave. Very well done and greatly enjoyed. Blessed Be n Hugs!!!

The information at the bottom is about the painting, it's not related to the poem. I just liked the way it looks.

Thank you very much for your time, kind review, and helpfull feedback. Blessed be.

This was a darker poem. The writer holding out hope that the pain of past mistakes will somehow be eased by falling for someone who had their own issues. This happens in rehab sometimes. You share the addiction and feel compelled to share the experience. Usually not a stellar outcome. Probably not our intended meaning but it's where my head went. Gretchen

Thank you very much, Gretchen. Yes, tanka can be very dark at times. They are poems of strong emotions. It was created in the Japanese Imperial Court where lovers wrote tanka for each other after a night of love making. Later on it has developed into all kinds of emotions in relationships. If you are interested to check it out,
I recommend this online book, it's free. The Ink Dark Moon Tanka is my favorite Japanese poetic form.

Oh yes indeed, we can't help others because we are ourselves tied and bound up in our own troubles, this is very insightful Gypsy, the thought of these things is convicting, beautifully written, blessings Roy

This sounds so awful and there are situations in real life where women are imprisoned and under the command of others and cannot escape, a poignant and chilling write, mythical but with an element of truth, love Dolly x
