What a moving, powerful story. To be able to sum up the magnitude of emotions playing out here in just 80 words is nothing short of brilliant. The fingerprints on the glass brought it all into focus for me. This poignant piece reminded me of how hard life must be right now in that section of the world. Well done!

I know I am late in giving you this, but your flash fiction is very deserving. Congratulations on the recent third-place finish. Your writing is quite fluid, and your word selection is spot on, which delivers precision to your writing.

I read all the stories listed in the contest results and consider yours to be the best. It has much drama and pathos contained in its brevity, with a particularly effective ending. Stories like this need to keep being told, to keep this tragedy to the fore to find a solution to Ukraine's pain at the hands of Putin. I am outraged whenever I think of this totally unacceptable war situation and its impact on so many innocents... both Ukrainian and Russian.

Oh!LisaMay! I was just reading the top three winning stories and I have to admit I was a little disheartened by the 3rd place. Then I read your message and your in-depth comments and thoughts about how that message needs the heard, and tears came up my old eyes. I feel like at least someone genuinely took the time to read my story. You have no idea how reassuring and encouraging you have been. I, like most people hate wars, and I pray that someone will stop that war criminal from taking more innocent lives.
Thank you so so so much for your boosting my confidence!!!!

That ending is magnificent - lingering like a ghost longing to stay. The choices these men/families have had to make is not only senseless, but tragic. Ukraine will never be the same.
I pray that someone close to Putin will put an end to him, as this is the only way there will be an end to this hellish war.
Good luck in the contest - you've written about something relevant and touching.

It's so sad when a monster has no regard for human life and commits atrocities of murder and mayhem that will affect lives long after the killing stops. Thanks for sharing.

It is a tragic situation for all of the people there,
Mario. You did a great job highlighting it. Your
words were descriptive with good dialogue and
a great, but sad, ending. I liked the idea of the
fingerprints as a ghostlike thing.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes in the contest, Jan

Comment from Ginda Simpson
In your eighty words, you paint a haunting picture of war. Fingerprints of the soldier/husband on the glass is a great image that is weighted with horror of war. At the very least separation, or worse, injury and loss of life. For what? I wish I had six stars left for this piece of writing.

Very poignant short story that is realistic about the refugee crisis in Ukraine and how it might feel to want to have a family member near and yet be separated. Best line I have read today and maybe all week so far: Staring at the window, she saw the loops and whorls of Alek's fingertips still on the glass, lingering like a ghost longing to stay.

It is a shame an Alliance hasn't formed this century where any invasion, anywhere takes place, all the other countries in the world rush to aide militarily the victim.
