I love Oscar Wilde. He is hysterical. Why some idiots still refuse to face the facts about homosexuality is beyond me. Most animals are not restricted to the opposite sex. And, 100 years from now, there will be no marriage as we know it. See, what your writing conjured up from me? hahaha Karen

Thank you so much, karen! Yes, I've just been listening to the news and it's all about men corrupting and endangering the world! Let's get rid of them:) Debbie x

I vote to remove 90% of them.
Let's limit their ability to interact. Just keep them for sperm. No more female-male sex. That would end most problems. Testosterone.

Grrr. I'm out of sixes. This one totally deserves a six. Your lilting meter is the perfect back-beat for the story of this incredible man.

It's all wonderfully done, but my favorite stanza is:

In fact, when landing in New York
and questioned without fuss,
he said he'd nothing to declare
except his genius

Now THAT's pithy coolness-laced-with-humor!!

Another masterpiece, Deb. xoxox

Oh he was great wasn't he! His wit just kept on coming and, if you ever get to watch The Importance of Being Earnest, it's a play of endless gems of genius! Thank you so much for this lovely review which I greatly appreciate. xoxoxo He would have loved you.

What a great history lesson, Debbie. I am not very familiar with Oscar and was very happy to learn about his life. You have a great poem here. I'm sur that Oscar is looking down with appreciation.

Thank you so much, Paul, for such a kind review which I greatly appreciate! He was an absolute genius who said outrageous thing but was dearly loved and very popular in his heyday. Sadly punished and ostracised later for being in love with another man. It defies belief now. I'm delighted you enjoyed. Debbie

Debbie!

This is well-written, and your notes contain interesting information about Wilde.

Stanza 8: True friends stab you in the front is an enlightening analogy.

I enjoyed this entire piece from beginning to end. Best, JohnC

A very informative read. I love articles that provide new information, especially on people of interest and Oscar Wilde sure fitted into that category. Well written and thank you for broadening my knowledge.

Sorry to report I've been rather lazy of late, but I will get the old 'puter out soon and recommence punching the old keyboard. Thanks for asking.

I think Oscar Wilde would approve of your portrayal of him and his work. "The Picture of Dorian Gray" is one of my favorite stories. Too bad he didn't write more stories, although we do have his great poetry to read and his plays.
Another excellent addition about the works of famous writers.
Thank you for sharing your insights in this well-written piece. Thank you also for more information in the author notes.

Thank you again! I'm delighted that this post triggered some memories for you. Yes, it's strange he didn't write more plays. I was actually watching an old version of The Importance of Being Earnest and I hadn't realised just how many of his famous quotes are contained in it. It's really very funny and silly. Thanks again, Debbie

Debbie! You have a real flair for bringing forth our master poets in verse and rhyme! I've not a suggestion for you...this seems impeccably written and it does my heart good to see Oscar Wilde portrayed with such respect and compassion! Bravo to you! Just what poet will you treat us with next?

He was a wise man and used his sarcastic quips to convey it. What a sad ending for such a man. I wonder what became of his wife. Great poetry with good meter and rhyme.

Thank you so much for this kind review and thoughtful comments! this is all much appreciated. Apparently his wife was quite poorly in the ten years leading up to her death in 1898 at the age of 40. It's thought that she may have been suffering from MS. Take care Debbie

So talented and witty, Oscar Wilde could have left us with so much more of his outstanding works. But like most of us, our worldly ways then to get us sidetracked. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

"Be yourself, simple, kind and unpretending." Yes, he was a narcissist like many who make love to their own kind. We are all unique, whether we like our bodies or not, we were made in the image of god. And god hates sinners. I regress. You have written about a clever man who loved himself so much. Thanks for sharing. K xx

Thank you so much, Kay, for this wonderful review and your thoughtful comments! Though he claimed to love himself, I'm inclined to think that this narcissism was part of the act and probably concealed an equal amount of insecurity underneath. He was extremely popular which might suggest that he also possessed empathy and understanding. An intriguing genius, nonetheless, who died too soon. Bless you. Debbie x

I agree. He wore a mask so people wouldn't see the real man. Usually lack of self-esteem.
