Oh yes, I am old enough to know of and love Aretha's wonderful music and voice.... But as this is a poem meant for everyone to read and understand I am not sure using Aretha really worked... At first I though you meant Alexa...but then I read your notes...
Perhaps you could rework it so that the thoughts in your head are easier to connect with...
This is not to say that I did not like the poem or the image, but because I do like it I am giving you an honest review because I do believe it could be even better...

So Lisa, you are giving me a four because it is your opinion about the ending, which everyone else thought was brilliant? Ratings here are not about whether we agree on the topic or how it made us feel as reviewers. Ratings are supposed to be done on the quality, and the workmanship of the poem. This was a challenging one and since everyone has a different opinion it can not be fairly judged that way. I am trying to help. If you would have said that my meter was off, or structurally it was bad, I would accept that. Thank you tho for taking a look at it, but I looked to see how you rated some others that were horribly done in the way they were written and yet you gave them a five. I just wish they would help new people a little more when they first come on. It isn't your fault, but it is damaging to rankings when they are not more clear how ratings should be given. And I mean this with the utmost respect. However suggestions are always welcome.

Oh my goodness... I thought I had given you a 5...I really loved your poem and only gave a few suggestions...sorry to have upset you... I got a 4 because someone felt that my poem What a Mess did not say enough about how I felt, etc. about the flood in our basement... I really felt that was so unfair...but ...what could I do

Oh you didn't upset me Lisa. But I think the site could help new people more. I watched for a half of a year before joining the writing part, but that was hard to do. Lol...if your intentions were a five, you can still change it and push save again. Thank you so much.

Yes, I thought I had tapped a 5... but I am on painkillers for a broken clavicle and 3 broken ribs so I am blaming my lack of attention on that... I accidentally gave 6 stars to poets, where I did not ended to... Yikes..

Ouch! I just said a little prayer for you as I know how wicked it is to live in pain. I also know the way opioids are as I just weaned off of mega doses of ten years. I hope you don't have to stay on them too long. I have Lupus and have had so many replacements from breaking things that drs called me bionic woman. Please feel better and I thank you so very much!
reply by Lisasview on 20-Jun-2023
Luckily I refused opioids... so I am on other pain things...not a perfect solution ,,but even at 75 I am strong...

Aretha Franklin, The Queen of Soul' had a gorgeous voice. I do remember her song 'Respect' and others.
Thank you for sharing this poem with us. It was fun to read. I have met a few men, and women, who have this ego issue. Thank you for sharing.

Hey Barb, I thank you for the awesome review and kind comments for my poem. I love the challenge of alternating only two rhymes, a little twist at the end, and "Respect" is a must. Thanks so much, my dear friend

I've suffered egotistical fools such as the gent in your poem. Those who never met a mirror they didn't love.
Those who had a PhD I suspected was purchased at Wal-Mart.

Great job carrying the same rhyme scheme throughout...

Light-hearted, yes... Yet these types can never love anyone more than themselves!

Sing it, Aretha!

I do love Aretha! Her scene in "The Blues Brothers" is marvelous. Your poem is pretty dang good too. I think your line about big egos don't correct is absolutely the truth. Well done. Terry.

I think we all have met this type of guy. I know I have. I forget what number he was in the lineup. I ran so fast, it's a blur. A cautionary story-in-a-poem in 8-6-8-6 form, very much like a duotrain. This last stanza with Respect by Aretha Franklin is the perfect ending. As we say here in the south, "He ain't gettin' none!"

Sending you my best today as always, and my very best wishes for the upcoming contest.
Sally :)) xoxo

A fun and flowing verse with humour and a good message that big egos don't allow for anyone else in their world! I'm glad she left because being spattered like a fly would have told her everything she needed to know! Thanks for sharing. Debbie

It's hard to understand why people pursue or stay with someone who doesn't respect them - yet many of us do. The story progression is good, and the end rhymes are spot on. Well done, and good luck in the contest.

Thanks for the author's note - I needed it! However, regardless of who Aretha is, your poem underscores the general truth that true connections only occur when we think more of others than ourselves. Nicely done.

This was a very good message told in a whimsical way. This happens all too often. Your rhyming was spot on and the flow was very good, making for an easy read.
