I enjoyed reading the poem, the old saying that opposites do attract seems to be well proven in your poem.
The rhyming in the verses used well chosen wording, and the poem was

Both have tender hearts.
The L and K in laid back and stickler sound AWESOME.

Hello Rachelle. I think we met before - but if not, I trained at the Guildhall in classical voice, then some years with an Opera teacher, but my favorite orchestral instrument is the flute - and I live in London.
I love your poem (You say potato . . .) because it is all so true! I know very few couples who started off as peas in a pod - and it does appear that opposites attract. That might mean meteoric rows are a weekly experience. The best British example I can think of, would be Victoria and Albert, who fought like cat and dog - when they weren't being rabbits!(Don't ask.)
Technically, quite an unusual rhythm - anapaestic, one beat to each of the first two lines, three in the third viz. 1-1-1,2,3 rest - but that works really well with a single rhyme on every last syllable of the tercet. In fact, your stanzas are six lines long with a single rhyme. It rattles along - great for comic verse -which this is. So that's the science, though I don't know why I'm explaining rhythm to a professional musician!
Thanks for a very entertaining poem - and a nice 'punch line' in the final couplet.

Wow, Paul, another math headache from you!! What gives? I'm the "expressive" part of that equation, remember? I rely on instinct when I write, never the actual counting of beats. That I save for when I'm singing or playing instruments or teaching my students to count. But look --it must be instinctive (or BEATen into me after six decades at it...like what I did there, btw?...) because it worked here.
At any rate, thank you for the nice review. I appreciate the encouragement.

ok Rachelle - I'll try to remember NOT to 'do the math' next time - but we both have harder rhythms to cope with musically.
I NEVER construct poems using technique, and if you look at my latest (just chosen for the welcome page! to my astonishment) you will see that I am an instinctive empathic writer - just like you. I could not be more divergent if I tried, but these boring nuts and bolts matter to lots of people - maybe just to the guys? No, I can't say that - just to some individuals.
So forget the math/s for now. Just know that I loved your poem.
