His generation was to buck up and bear up under any adversity and to not burden others with there problems, I never heard either of my grandfathers complain about anything ever. Goos story. Karen

Your story of Lofty captured my heart. So many men suffered and died in that war. And to see his face in the side mirror at your Mam's funeral was definitely a sign that he was there for you. Well said, well written. K xx

You have a father and a Tribute Poem you can be very proud of. So many of us cannot recollect tears in our fathers' eyes. I cry just at a sad movie. This was very moving, and you told it with just the right use of language and in a way that made us get to know more personally your father and his story.

This is so true and in so many ways mirrors the exploits of my character Gavin in the earlier chapters where he has to make a forced landing on the Dunkirk beach and is taken prisoner. The whole thing is there in my portfolio. I think you would enjoy it and I certainly would not expect you to review it.

Reading this was in so many ways an endorsement of my own story here. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Thank you Jim so much for this! I'm so pleased you read it and when I started writing the verse, I'm ashamed to say that I had to read up about this particular failed mission. Apparently this was so ill thought out that they attempted a Royal Navy rescue mission which had to return to Britain after being fired at by the Germans. Thus unlike Dunkirk, the soldiers couldn't be evacuated, were completely surrounded, just pawns carelessly fed to the enemy. If I've got any of this wrong, please let me know... But thank you again and I hope you didn't feel obliged to give me such a generous rating. Night-night Debbie

Wow! How you have captured the heart and soul of this man, his strength and his resilience, his hope and his deep love for family! You give us the wholeness of who he was. Beautifully written.

I wish I could thank your father for his service. What an incredible and brave man he was, to have survived that awful experience. The relationship between mothers and children are special, I can understand the emotion he felt at his mother's passing. This is a well written and interesting story in a poem, thanks for sharing.

What a powerful story so beautifully told. The tone, imagery, emotion and love shine in this poem. The rhyme scheme and pace make it easy to read. Then, boom - the last verse, and to me most emotional. It describes a man losing perhaps the one person left he worried about when captured and how that had to affect her. She'd also be the one he cried to. My dad fought in WWII and I remember the nightmares he had afterwards.
After reading through your poem several times, I cannot think of anything to make it better.

Thank you so much for this amazing rating and your lovely, thoughtful comments. This is all great valued and I'm delighted that the verse was meaningful to you. You are the first one to touch on the relationship he had with his mother - she adored him as an only son and it must have been heart-breaking for her during those 5 years. They were very close and, as you say, she'd have been the one with whom he would have felt freer perhaps to share his emotions. Thank you once more for your time and thoughts, Debbie

A very interesting poem about one of the saddest events in recent memory, but this is a personal view of it rather than what is usually read. Always hardest when it occurs to a close relative.

This is very well made. The rhymes and syllables counts all combined to tell a moving story of perseverance in the face of adversity. War leaves scars that do end or heal when the bullets stop flying. I think we forget that sometimes.

Well done.

The sub title here is revealing and what follows is a story of bravery and heroism of a father during WW11. It is unimaginable what these brave men must have endured in the cause of peace on earth
