Well, you hit home with me on about every line of this one. Tom T. Hall was one of my dad's favorites, and someone whose words most of us could relate to. And as someone who breed and raced thoroughbreds for damn near 50 years, and spent a few miserably hot summers myself in Shreveport, I've daily met and known those who set out to gamble on life in the fast lane. Most people usually thought I must have been a gambler, but in truth, I'm more of the stack the deck type, and only bet or take chances when the odds are greatly in my favor. Of course, even then, I'd sometimes lose. But it isn't really gambling when you know you'll win more often than lose. LOL. I've often listened to the words of a couple old Texans who recently passed away. Thomas Preston, better known as Amarillo Slim, and Doyle Brunson, the mild mannered, soft spoken, dynamo. Thanks for sharing a familiar page in so many people's life. Much enjoyed!

This is hilarious, and I loved the ending. Your story had me cackling like and old setting hen all the way to the end. This is the kind of writing I truly enjoy reading. Great work.

I like your excellent story; it sounds just like a cowboy living that kind of cowboy life.
You mix humor with pathos--I felt for the protagonist when his fun ended with a twenty-thousand dollar bill.
Good luck with this one, Terry.

That was quite a ride! Terry, you told an engaging story with a great finish line!
This is the best cowboy-to-poet story I have ever read!
This speaks for all of us who have it in our minds to win the ladies and to make it rich quickly.
Well done!
Thanks for taking me on the ride of my life!
Jesse

Nice writing, even though I 'bout choked on the decisions that this 'better be fiction' character made. I hope his mother throttled him.
Oh, and one of my very good friends is an HVAC man and he serviced the trailer park that I owned in Arkansas. I almost NEVER had to buy a new compressor, but if I needed one, he got me a used one for $150. Hah!
Best wishes.

This is an intriguing story full of humor and realistic actions. It sounded logical and as though it could have really happened. The story pulled you in and aroused your curiosity to see where this would be cowboy was going. I chuckled at the humorous ending. Well done.

I'm sure glad to know this was humor fiction. I've heard that song a few time too and I concluded it was the stupidest song Tom T. ever wrote. We women would all end on the losing end if all guys thought that way. Time passes the younger women get older. The story rang true cause one could go though go fIfty thousand fast at that rate. I've met some air conditioning specialists that had the same idea as this would be cowboy.

Beth, thank you for reading and for your review. There is a saying that there is some truth to all humor. I think that is true for this little story. Terry.

I hope there isn't too much truth. I know your are smarter than that. LOL

Your protagonist had a time to remember. It was certainly an interesting experiment, albeit an expensive one. Looks like he'll be paying for it for a while, especially the taxes. Sue Ellen came off like a bandit.
Excellent story telling. You had me engaged from the first to the end. The story left me smiling and shaking my head. Oh, the joys of life.

Hahahaha! What a romp, Terry. And the legend grows! I remember something you wrote some time ago about an air conditioning company, but you were more on the selling end, weren't you. Or am I thinking about someone else? But no matter. You knew how to live like a poet and shot big blanks. What more could a reader ask for?

Aww, Mr. Squires, you do honor me with a six-star review!! Thank you, Sir. I had a story about a skylight salesman. This story just wrote itself. I just sat there and watched. Thank you. Terry.

Terry oh my goodness what a story. I used to go to the racetracks in NYC as a kid because my father painted them, the tracks not the horses. I enjoyed the story but thought it would end with purchasing a horse and winning the Kentucky derby with it.

I like your descriptive writing with a bit of humor too. Have a good day, Friend! Alex ;))
