You really do wonder, how anyone can let others have all that grief. But, the thing is some folks simply do not have that switch turned on. They do not really think of others as being related to them in any way. They do not know what friends are. Blessings for you and your extended family. Karen

Thankfully, this wasn't a relative of mine but the son of a friend, I assume is still missing. The thing is that this sort of behaviour is completely irrational ...and desperate. And that's the rub because he was obviously very depressed to the point that he couldn't (or didn't want to) explain himself to anyone. Thanks so much for this, Karen. I'm very grateful. Debbie

This poem, Missing, presented with iambic tetrameter and an ABAB-rhyme scheme, follows the usual progress of a missing person investigation, which makes wide circles and then tightens eventually around the "last seen with" suspects. One can only imagine the heartsick void.

Thank you so much for this kind review and you very thoughtful comments. Of course this would be a scenario with which you'd be familiar and, although it adds further trauma to the family, they naturally have to be eliminated as suspects. The not knowing must be true torture... and he's still missing. Take care Debbie

I don't know what's worse for a parent. Wondering if your child (and they're always your child even if they're 40) is alive or knowing they are dead. Both seem to be very painful.

Thank you so much for this! I absolutely agree that the not knowing is simply awful and may explain why the father has made his own spiritual choice that his son is at peace. Hope is just too challenging perhaps. Your thoughts mean a lot to me. Take care Debbie

This seems to be a day when your works pop up on me. This was another tale I wish could have some sense of a positive outcome. But your words described perfectly the painful sense of loss and tragedy and the comfort The Lord can give us, even in troubled times.

Thanks again, Jim! Yes, this is very sad and absolutely true. The not knowing is the worst and may explain why the father is soothed by his faith in believing that his son is at peace now. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated. Take care Debbie

Your words made me thankful that my daughter is rising above her challenges and loves The Lord.

These are such difficult times especially for the young and you obviously have a very strong and balanced daughter.

She has medical issues but is a strong Christian.

I can't think of anything more difficult than the not knowing. It is indeed a parent's worst nightmare. Your poem is written very well, with good rhyme and flow as it tells the sad story. I hope that one day they may find closure.

Thank you so much, Wendy, for your kind review and thoughtful comments! I agree with you on the not knowing with might explain why the father is more consoled by the thought of his son being at peace despite the lack of evidence. Take care Debbie

Oh my gosh, I found this so intriguing, but was then horrified by your notes that this was not fiction.
What a horror story for the parents. What terrifying scenarios must be running through the parents minds. Very sad indeed.
Great writing.

This theme of not knowing and the way it always rides upon your thoughts and is swallowed down into your heart is so true. How often we don't recognize the ones left behind. Was the act of leaving thoughtless or was something more sinister at play? Well done. Loren

How sad for that family. The pain is more in the not knowing where he went, whether he is still alive somewhere. You did a fabulous job writing this story in a poem, Debbie, it was a sad one, but a pleasure to read such well written poetry. Warm hugs, Sandra xx

Thank you so much for your kind review and thoughtful comments, Sandra! This all means a great deal to me. I agree that the not knowing seems to be the worst part of this. Maybe this is the reason the father has convinced himself that his son is at peace. Take care, Debbie

What a heart-wrenching story for any parent to read, much less endure, but this poem is outstanding! I believe you captured everything you were trying to say wrapped up in a little package and it flows beautifully. I'm sorry it was based on a friend's true story though. Heart-breaking.

a powerful and moving poem based on a true case of a young man who disappeared without a trace. Who knows what demons drove him to take a walk and whether he lived or died.===
