Oh, this is such good writing. I'm sure that this will resonate with so many readers. I'm fortunate to have some wonderful friends to share those deep conversations with that you referred to, and I'm sad to say I've also had plenty of those superficial conversations when masking grief in the workplace. Your final line is so memorable. What a beautiful piece.

Thank you very much. I appreciate the review very much, especially since it is no longer promoted. We all wear masks at times because often people are not interested to know griefs or other "negative" things. But we do need a few close friends who will listen with care and support, and offer insight and wisdom. Many thanks for your support and encouragement.

Fantastic story for the contest, Wendy. Yes, we all wear our masks when we're out and about but great to not have to wear them around friends. Great ending too. Lol. Congratulations on the big win. Have a great day.

Sounds like you may have a good excuse to cry. Just do not allow him to see you do so.

Never any need to wear false masks.

If someone does not like the real "you" are they truly worth the bother?

Absoltely right in every comment. I learned to wear a mask as a child because it was safer. So most people don't really know me very well as I am still a very private person. But hard to discard social masks totally. Thanks for reviewing.

Really well written, Wendy, and this will be a deserving winner. Love the ending which uses the famous song or phrase but twists it nicely to fit with the whole piece. An important message here. Well done. X

So true that it is hard to act happy when your heart is breaking. Others at the dinner party are right not to share their personal griefs and spoil the merriment. On the other hand, if they take off their mask and open up, they might discover that others are worse off.

This contest entry complies with the required word count precisely although I had difficulty understanding what was required in 'A story drawn from your personal reality but not strictly non-fiction.' The requirement seemed to be contradictory. What is meant by 'not strictly non-fiction'? Anyway, weather this is fact or fiction I found it an interesting read.

Thank you for reviewing. I also found it confusing. I think, for most, the entries were pretty much non-fiction although that?s not easy to verify anyway.

Well composed and so true. So many things are superficial but then there are times that must be real, and much deeper. You have described that very well. Love the conclusion.
All the best for the competition.
Cheers

Your last line was extremely and cleverly done. Talking about all the many masks we wear and all the versions of ourselves we present to the world certainly rings true. Karen
