Congratulations on your win. This was a very moving story. I am a retired secondary teacher here in the states. I have seen situations (not as dramatic as yours) that have given me hope for the future, but many times these students change when immerse themselves in the real world.

One of the great privileges of teaching is meeting those students who change others for the better; clearly this remarkable young woman falls into this category. I like how you keep this rooted in details. The use of "bitumen" for example added a layer of detail without being merely descriptive ("show don't tell" as they say). Instead it anchored the reader into a specificity of texture, sight, and smell. This is why diction is so important, and words have to be respected in all theirs shades of meaning, not as things to be swapped in and out interchangeably; just as a composer views each individual note, as expressed by each instrument, as related but unique entities.
