Hi Doug, this story has great humor. I am with you. Leave the cheese platter, take the Jack. (Sort of like the Godfather, "Leave the gun, take the cannoli.") Lol, but true. Keep toasting to Rick, and give that man his last dying wish. Well done. You made me laugh. I wouldn't mind a nip of Jack myself. I like mine straight, over ice. I could see why this was a contest winner. Cheers! LateBloomer ~ Margaret

Thanks, Margaret. I laid this down pretty much how it happened. A nip of Jack. Now that?s a title!

Congratulations on winning the contest!
Wow - this is quite spooky, and something I think a lot of us who participate in the holiday parties can relate to - not that we all find extra gifts in the shopping bag!!
Well done, and thank you for your amazing writing,

Thanks Patty! It was eerie

Yikes! Who says that spirits can't participate?
This is a tad spooky, but it doesn't surprise me. It delights me as I'm a huge fan of the supernatural.
That gift is no joke, and I'll bet he was beside you with every pour!
What a great story, Douglas, and experience! Best, JohnC

It is odd how many people seem to have had similar experiences.

It's not similar to me at all. I found it unique, but not surprising. They're always around us altering life as they please. It's a feel-good thought--to me anyway. Loved it!

What a great story this is! I would have been the one who refused to drink "a dead man's whiskey", but the fact that you toasted him each time you poured made it all okay:-)
Do you still attend that party each year?
This story was to the point - telling us what we needed to know without going on too long. Congratulations on the win.

Oh, WOW! I am not sure how I feel about the idea of drinking that whiskey, but I know I loved the story.
I have one, very minor suggestion to make, purely so that the presentation makes clear who the dialogue belongs to, right from the start -- you have:
This is what Jim relayed, "My father-in-law, Rick,..."
I am suggesting you begin a new paragraph with the dialogue, like this:
This is what Jim relayed--
What an awesome experience!
"My father-in-law...

An entertaining story with a slightly spooky element. I enjoyed the understated humour and thought you used strong verbs well. Good luck in the contest.

This is an interesting story! I especially liked how you told it with great descriptions like " greedily wrapped my meaty paw ." I guess Rick wanted someone to enjoy his whisky and drink a toast to him all year!
Best wishes in the contest!

I really liked this entry. I thought it filled the need for a haunted holiday and voted for it. Your writing is good, and the story flows smoothly to the correct conclusion. Oddly, today as I was cleaning out a rental unit of a tenant who died, I found a still sealed Tiffany decanter of JB.

Thank you for your amusing humor: "Now I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I like a little shot of whiskey in my coke..." Other readers will laugh & identify. We were invited to guess...right ! The ending is funny.

Thanks, Liz! You really are the kindest reviewer. I really debated about putting a true story in this contest, but I think it is holding its own! You once told me to go with my gut?.although you don?t know who I am?..so ha! This makes no sense to you!
