A traveler on horseback wouldn't have to see very much to assess the situation and realize something was wrong. Thanks for sharing another fine post.

But with what would they have poisoned the water, Ben? I liked this little flash, and I hope it will do well in the contest. I also hope you'll have a Merry Christmas. Ulla:)))

Several plant lives in the desert are poisonous. The Apache liked using dead carcass of coyotes or other animals. The y knew horses would never drink when dead carcasses are involved. thanks Ulla.

Good artwork for your story, Ben. A good opening paragraph sets the scene. It is good that the rider is cautious about his surroundings, given the time period. He quickly learned that trouble had been here, and the water was unsuitable for animals and people. A very good conclusion showing what the rider had learned from this experience.

A good entry that could actually go on to be a longer story. Good luck in the contest.

You are the second one to say this. I may consider creating a true story about this. I know some history and have research available. I may do it in 2004. Thanks Pam. I always enjoy your reviews.

This was a short, dramatic post. Well done. I look forward to more from you, soon. I still need to get back on track myself. You may be surprised at what I put up. I can't remember if you have seen my Facebook or my YouTube stuff.

Oh no, how awful!! I found this well written short piece of flash fiction very sad!! After finally reaching a waterhole he finds out it's been poisoned. You have described the scene well. Good luck.

That horse was all primed to have a nice cool drink. He likely doesn't understand why he is being led aways. This is a very nice 80 word flash. I find it hard to get exactly 80 words.

Ben.
I enjoy western stories regardless of 80 words or 2000 words so long they are written well as yours is

What do you think was used to poison water in that era?

Well written and best of wishes in the contest.
John

There were several plants that would do it.much like the Lilly of the Valley. They used dead coyotes to make the water undrinkable. A horse would never drink water if dead carcass is used, Thanks John.

Oh my goodness Ben... I have not actually read any of your lately... I just have not seen any, because if I had I would have read and reviewed...
I think this is a good story told in 80 words... I know it isn't easy....

Poisoning water holes must have been a way of thwarting one's enemy, but also a way of cutting off one's nose to spite one's face, ah the scorched earth method, beautifully written Ben, blessings Roy

I think the Apache at the time knew their enemy and used every method for deterrence. Thanks Bro.

This is an exploration of a dark chapter in American history. I feel that I don't know as much about this as I probably should and feel motivated now to do some Googling and learn more. Thank you for the share.
