This poem has a very strong appeal, with not merely a mention of past events, but also it creates very vivid images with a reference to the scents that once evoked a loving relationship but now only emphasize the sorrow felt.

Hi MariVal,
This is a good tanka. I like the strong metaphor of the mind as an attic for storage of memories. This poem has a sad feel to it.

Another fine poem, Gypsy---- and I'd never have stuff in the attic that belonged to my ex for two reasons. One, no attic here, and b. because I would have a ritualistic cleansing bon fire and torch all her clothes and my memories!

It must not be over then. To keep the moments of someone who betrayed you means they still have a piece of your heart. The imagery was strong. The once beautiful flowers and shiny read candy boxes now dead, dusty and tucked away. Much like that piece of the heart. Great poem. Gretchen

I like that you make "betrayal" a scent. I remember that Dean loved the word "detritus." And I'm sure betrayal smells like something rotting. Great descriptions in your poem! Best wishes in the contest!
