Are we really so different--mothers and daughters?

I really enjoyed this poem. The mother-daughter relationship is a unique one. Some daughters love/hate their mothers. It looks like yours is a love relationship. I do not see any room for improvement. Have a blessed day.

Thank you for reading and reviewing, eliz100. I appreciate your feedback. (Sorry for the late reply. I've just now recovered from two back-to-back sicknesses: occupational hazard of being a teacher--and not one I would trade for the world.) Thank you again for reading.

This is beautifully expressed in your free verse, drawing the reader in from the start but then poignantly disclosing that your mother is no longer with us. Excellent poetry is when the poet captivates the reader into dwelling on their own position/relationship. And you've perfectly achieved this. Well done. Your Mom would be proud. Debbie

This is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. I especially loved --though in that "gut-wrenching, heart-stabbed way-- the words " home of dirt and grass with a marble headboard." That is writing gold. So stark, yes, but SOO totally memorable!

Any mom would be proud to have such a talented writer to brag about as her daughter, but especially who was a writer, herself.

Wonderful, very touching poem. Great work. xo

As an educator myself, I couldn't agree more. There's trade-offs in this life. Glad you're much better now. xoxoxo

You said it! My favorite part is watching the students excel, especially the ones who struggle and then one day have that "ah-ha" moment. I love seeing it.

A thought provoking poem as I read into your lines and see my mother and me but also my daughter and me. A very contemplative poem.
Very nicely done.
Blessings

This is like the two sides of the same coin. I like the way you describe the lives so different yet in the end so similar.
We have to make decisions every day which affect our lives in the end.
Thank you for sharing!
Blessings with hugs and kisses!

I really like this poem. Being true to yourself is one of the great truths and I am glad you have reached that point. Nice format and reads so well.

I thoroughly enjoyed your poem. The style in which you chose to present it was perfect. I like how you bounced back and forth between you two showing similarities and differences.

Well penned.

No problem. I looked at your profile and see your new and the same age as my daughter. She as well graduated with a teaching degree. Unable to find a job at first, she took a job at Fort Monmouth with the Department of Defense and has been the ever since.

    Welcome to FS.

Thank you for the warm welcome. This is actually my second time on the site. My mom paid for a year subscription when I was younger, but I didn't have the money to keep it going. Wow, I know that feeling. I hope your daughter's doing well and enjoying her job.

This is a lovely poem that you have written about two women, your mother and yourself. What a fantastic story it is and I enjoyed listening to it very much. I admire the fact that you became a teacher, and you wanted to work with highschoolers that is very special in my mind People who work with junior high and highschoolers are some of the best teachers that I know. Have a good day and may God richly bless you with all good things. Patricia.

Thank you for reading and reviewing, Patricia. I appreciate your feedback. I actually work with elementary students but have taught and loved middle school. My mom was the one who taught high school. I'm still daunted by that age group. Maybe one day I'll venture into it. (Sorry for the late reply. I think that applies to two human, both closely related but following different ideals and diverse career path, a common and yet uncommon alliance to one another, but yet two individual unique in their essence. Well done, great post, blessings Roy
