I have paper pads all over the house where I write things that strike me. Like: wallpaper peeling down taking with it her dreams. Or: three loud knocks at the door. It's the police again, Herbie! When my muse is upon me, I write down opening lines and save them for when I am stuck. "Pamela opened the door cautiously; then she saw the blood." " Henry was good and tired, he thought to himself. But I knew he was neither good nor tired." "The noises never stopped too bad they were all in his head." I also make lists of people's names. Alphabetically. Agnes Philpot ( doesn't that sound like a doomed character?)
Bethany Macallister ( a snob if I ever heard one),
I make lists of ways to die. I list articles for dispatch.
When you cannot do your story making lists helps keep your mind productive. And when you are stuck one of those lists might someday help spark you.
And, if you are feeling especially snarky, you can write pretend reviews on paper, not on the computer, (just in case), about how truly bad some of the things here are. ( Not mine of course). Just some ideas. Maybe one might help you. Or, you could tell me to go suck rotten eggs. :-) Karen

    Thank you, Karen!

This is quite a review, and all ideas are much appreciated and relatable. I've noticed that the cycle must run its course like the flu. Eventually, all is well, minus a few sniffles and fatigue.

Thank you, my friend! I love those character names! Agnus Philpot>>loved it!

This is one of the most creative and inspiring posts I've read in a long time. All of us fight these same battles, but you have outlined them so clearly, we have a better chance of overcoming them! Your muse hasn't left you - It merely went in another direction and you produced this exceptional post. ann

This was a delightful story of an imaginary war against an imaginary and yet very real enemy that we all face at times. The best way I know to overcome it is to pretend that I don't pretend to be a writer and that it isn't necessary that I write at all. In the meantime I'll just practice my typing skills and see if anything makes sense that I've written. Whether it does or not, I shouldn't give it too much thought or question it too long, or it will end up in the garbage can. I'll just post by white flag and see if anyone salutes. Someone is bound to give me five stars and restore my confidence.

First, I like the word, 'Nonexistance' against' against 'block' it's less daunting.
I loved the way you were arguing with 'nonexistance' it seems to have worked. Whenever I get a 'nonexistance' I write something completely different. That confuses the little devil. Lol.

This made a great little story, and I'm sure many found it relateable, I did. And it was fun to read! What more could a reader ask for? I enjoyed this, John. Well done! :)) Sandra xx

The realm of nonexistence - that's a really good way to expres it! I enjoyed the cut and thrust of battle you described with the characters seeking to fight their way onto the page and take up residence. Sometimes the victory is just the perseverance! :)

I have a confession, and it probably won't make you feel any better, but here goes: I had chronic writers block from 2018 to 2022. Couldn't complete a paragraph. I jumped into painting and collage. But I would check in on Fanstory. Even rejoined once, but vacated it soon after. Then in August of 2022, I came back. This time I came back to learn. I didn't care that I was posting mediocre stories. I was posting, writing and completing stories again. That was my flex. Hang in there. Change your focus. Don't stress. Just post a two paragraph piece. It ain't gone, it's just tired. This was great. Gretchen

This is pure genius. Thank you for sharing it with us. It's creative and as author's we've all been there. You did a great job writing this. I know it's only Sunday and we've just received our sixes but I'm already out of them. How horrible for you!!! This deserves many sixes. I pray others give them to you.

It's genius. Every skirmish and battle I've fought is here... Personified to best indicate the very intense war occurring between what I want to accomplish and that damn WALL someone keeps insisting on building!

The walls don't work. Not forever. We do emerge from the purple passion, the endless attempts fisted into crumpled paper, the amalgamation of disembodied characters coming together without our will! (A Frankenstein's monster laughing at my inability)--

I've set up camp on InDoubt Mountain for so long that I thought to change my mailing address.

Loving the "Ed It" -- Even if sometimes "Editing" honestly and with some sense of responsibility has circled back and attacked me from the rear flank with the BLOCK yet again!

The brilliance is sticking it out. Write what you know. If Writer's Block is all the muses will eke out to you, have at it!

And you did that! If there's one reader who ingests this post and shakes his or her head saying "Hmmm, I've never had that problem." I daresay they need intensive time with the aforementioned giant, Ed It!

Applause John...

Even MY muse seems to me uncomfortable. You've inspired me to give her some push back!

Thank you, Karenina! Yes, it is unfortunate we can't mass together to face the challenge as one army. It would certainly help, but I don't think the numbers game is the way to go when the shit hits the fan.

Hugs, mt friend I pray all is well with you and yours!

Hi John,
I think many of us can relate, though not in as great detail, to the Block. I know I fought it for years. Finally, it's beaten back in some part. I see it has for you as well. You've found a subject close to so many hearts. What do you do when you just can't scrape up another idea?

With a great deal of imagery and symbolism, you spoke your heart and ours as well.

Take care,
Rhonda

Oh my gosh, John, this is so very creative and I love it! You've taken the cure for writer's block to a whole new level, and I will now forever think of these characters on the other side of the door battling me as I try to bring them to life!

Great line: Am I God? Nah, I'm just a guy with a pen.

You have closed quotes after "erroneous prose standing before me!" Not necessary.

"purple prose pygmies" LOL!

I really think this is one of the best things you've written. The creativity is off the charts, it's intelligent (as all of your writing is), and to narrate a story that all of us here are part of is great. This was an amazing first read of the day for me. Thank you so much! You've taken lemons (writer's block) and made lemonade (a great story) here:-)

Thank you for the six, Pam! I'm happy you enjoyed this one, with a lasting interpretation to boot! You've been pounding work out so I'm not sure if your due for a bought of writer's block all
too soon. It seems to creep up on me when my muse is dormant. Lol. Hugs
