I enjoyed reading this chapter of your novel. It is full of information of what is going on in the garden and getting to know the narrator.
An easy read with a fine flow and pace.
Did the slugs ever talk back?
Thank you!

Hi Liz, this is such a fun story. You made me smile. Of note:

Trudy snuck into her house and snatched a salt shaker for us.

(Liz, Good descriptive writing. I wish that snatching salt shakers were the only problems of today's generation. Trudy was sweet and innocent.
Too bad her family was quick with a switch.)

Also:
My favorite setting in any of my kitchens was a fresh simmering pot of soup filled with seasoned ingredients from my garden.

(Liz, I understand how you love the aroma of soup cooking on the stove. My grandmother in PA made soup every single day for lunch. M-Thurs she made chicken noodle soup. She even made her own noodles for the soup. On Friday, she made vegetable soup from the vegetables that she picked from her large, extensive garden. Basically, her whole back property was her garden. She grew everything, and then in the fall, she spent 2-3 days canning her veggies, etc.)

The cleanup of the hurricane must have been scary for you, especially since one of the trees struck the middle of your house. When hurricane Sandy hit our area, we had no power for over a week, and houses were reduced to sticks. Some families are still not back into their houses. I remember sitting in my family room and praying that the tree outside our home would not come through the middle of our house. It didn't, and I had it cut down after that storm for a tune of almost $2,000.

Thank you for sharing this story and walk down memory lane. This story is from a time when less was more. Well done. Margaret

Thank you for your extensive sharing review . Your grandmother knows the right thing to do It makes everything smell so good. I freeze up several different portions so I can have it throughout the winter. It sustains me. A large branch fell on my house. It spread pretty well the whole side of the house. And when I saw the tree it came from, I noticed the tree was leaning so like you, I spent nights thinking if it comes down it will cut my little house right in half. Would I be able to still sleep with my dog and this half of the house Oh that sounds like such, tragedycomedy. The irony of this whole thing is we didn't have any power because it was so much snow and I was burning in my wood stove and thanking the trees for giving me the wood. Just as I said that little thank you there was bang. Down came that giant branch. Because I was older that didn't bother me the way it did when I was three. Ooof

I feel badly for your serious experience with the hurricane. Take care.

Liz, after going down some bumpy roads in life, it is amazing how matter-of-fact we can be when in the midst of adversity. Have a great day. Margaret

This is a very engaging chapter. It brought back memories for me also. That digging to China thing. Maybe every kid does that. And then every kid gives up at a few feet. I'm impressed you made it to 3 feet lol!

I just had one grammar thing to share with you:

" I am well-trained ..."
This should not be hyphenated. You only hyphenate if it's followed by an object "a well-trained dog".

Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed your story! Julie

What a great continuation chapter, Liz. I loved all the animals buried at the site, to bad about Blacky. I loved the way the old guy was able to chip away at the cement to provide for a furnace and oil tank. I loved the gardens which grew all over the place and the two window boxes that produced tomatoes and cucumbers. Great jobs about writing about gardening. Blessings n Hugs!!!

I, too, remember attempting to dig to China. Until my older sister Kathy brought out The World Book of Knowledge about fossils and things that showed me I could not actually dig straight through. What a disappointment. Nice story. Karen

Yes, I wanted to see the "yellow" people. Eat chop suey, and get one of those "outfits".
I knew nothing about diplomacy! :-) Karen

I don't think we thought about what we were going to eat It was more of what we would be able to wear how we should dress how fun.

When I was a kid, "Chop Suey" sounded so adventuresome, the most exotic food I had ever heard of. It made franks and beans sound so lackluster in comparison . :-) Karen

Cans of chop suey omg I thought that was the best food there was. Now I'm hooked on moo shoo pork

I like Pork egg rolls, House fried rice, Egg drop soup cold, when it is like eating jello, moo shu pork, and green beans.
    Now, I am hungry. Karen

I found how easy it is to actually make mooshu pork i had all the ingredients that was what was really amazing and so I made up several i made up enough for about three or fourportions I don't eat much anyway so I eat in between meals and that way when it's actually time to eat I'm not I'm I don't gorge I used to overeat so now I don't have to go or it's because I've been eating something every 2 hours I started doing that when I was working and it worked it works for me.

So did you communicate with the slugs and told them about their untimely end if they didn't leave your veggies alone? The idea of dead pets sharing the same plot with the garden veggies is a bit macabre. But now you reminded me about how much I loved growing lemon cucumbers.
Thanks for sharing this history of gardens and your experiences!

You drew me in from the first paragraph. You did an excellent job evoking all of the senses.I could feel the cool soil on my skin, taste the fresh veggies, and see the cats and dogs running around and flying through the air haha. Thank you for sharing this!

Wow this is quite a compliment. You brought something out I wasn't even aware I could do. I envy the other writers who seem to be able to evoke from the senses and I don't know.
this is a wonderful. thank you I am so honored

You can do it too! I think we see in others' work what we can't see in our own sometimes!

I feel the tranquility that comes from your memories related to your garden, especially since has double function, providing you veggies for your meals but also time for self-reflection.
