Gripping, tragic and potentially true for any one of us. Some of us are just one step from such a scary place if we dare to think about it. Most of us condemn the homeless as lazy, drug-addicted losers. But, in truth, they are not so different from us. They just lost their way.

You have the material for a book or a collection of short stories in your volunteer work that might elicit real sympathy for these unfortunate souls.

The contest requirements called for three stanzas of 3-6-9 syllables each. So, met that necessity.

Many people who become homeless never imagined themselves ending up in that inevitable predicament.

When one loses respect, there is not much more one has to lose.

Most people who encounter the homeless do have a way of looking away in an effort to avoid contact with the homeless person.

"many missing payments" - through job loss, burning it up on drugs, booze, or whatever may be the cause, no money is a very common reason people end up homeless.

So true, one never knows what tomorrow will bring and could be one catastrophe from becoming homeless themself.

A poignant poem about a Modern plaque.

That is a sobering thought and really we should always be humble before God and others. We never know if it could be us and should show more compassion to those who are homeless/houseless. Well said in your 3-6-9 poem!

Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us. Some people are only a paycheck away from being homeless. One never knows what tomorrow has in store for them. I enjoyed reading and good luck with the contest.

I cannot in good conscious support the local shelters when they put the homeless out on the streets during the day and probably rifle through what little belongings they leave there when they're gone. The homeless deserve respect and food. But sadly restaurants and food stores are made to destroy their food before throwing it out so that the homeless can't eat it. They say its for safety, but its to drive them away. I do give spare food, when I have it, to local food banks. But not many homeless people have the means to cook what is provided them.

This is a very powerful piece. A stark reminder how close we all are to a very different life than we're used to. Excellent work, and thank you for your work with our vulnerable population.

Very well done. Great sentiment.
I owned a low end mobile home park for nearly twenty years. Once evicted by me, it was either back to parents (or grandparents) or to the street. Sometimes I let them stay, pretending to believe their lies (that they wanted to be the truth) until they were indebted by thousands. But when the electric company shut them off, and my bank was not as lenient to me...
Selling out was a good move for me, but at a recent drive-thru, I saw that most units were vacant, benefiting no one.

Thank you for your review. It is becoming more difficult every day. Where I live high rent is the issues. To rent an apartment you have to earn at least three times the rent. Rent can start at $1000.00 per month. Thanks again for your review.

It's sad that many people treat the homeless with disdain, it's not their fault that they are in this position. Most people can't fathom the idea of being homeless, but we never know what is around the corner, we have to treat everyone with kindness and respect. A well written piece.

There are many people, and families living in their cars here in Australia that would never have thought to be in this situation. A good reminder that homelessness can happen to anyone.
Cheers

Well said. In countries like ours, there should be no homelessness. Since COVID-19, we have previously well-fed, working folks living in tents with children on our beautiful foreshores while the tourists look on.
