This is an excellent story. You use good imagery and descriptions. Adding a photo image would enhance your post but is net necessary. My mother made turnips and since she's been gone I haven't had one. Thank you for sharing this.
Best wishes,
Alex

Thanks so much. I looked for a picture but I didn't have one and couldn't find one on Fan Art. I will add one if I find it.
Thanks so much for your kind review. I am sorry for your loss. Hard to lose a mother.

Nicely written with only a couple tiny SPAGS.
apricots..and Then...turnips! - Maybe (apricots. And then... turnips!)
...turnips--now... - a dash (or double dash) will turn into an em dash in MSWord
Bacon DOES improve everything!

Yes, I can understand - but now I too am wondering what she did with them all. Did she feed them to the animals or did she find a way of disguising them? Well written. Enjoyable reading.

First read of yours and I found it to be so funny...and brought back memories...
One from only last year. Our wonderful housekeeper brought us a huge crate of what we thought were apples but they were not... They were mussy inside... The crate was kept covered in what is called our under built, here in Spain.. Sort of like a nice basement in the States... We did not want to offend her...so every few days we would take a few out (when she was around) and put them in one of our composts out in the far garden... took a long time but we finally got rid of them all...

thanks, Lisa. I have laughed about those turnips for years and finally decided to make a story of them. I appreciate the review. You may like my story "Ain't Emmy" as well.

Seventy-six and counting, one blessing, I think, is never to have tasted a turnip; in fact, the only threat of being near one was when mother said I am going to put you in a turnip basket if you don't behave. I've been angelic since.

Hello Journaler, I enjoyed reading your story. Besides myself, only one of my sons like turnip. When Thanksgiving comes, if he is not here for dinner, I don't bother to make turnips--not even the frozen box of them. A fun story. Thank you for sharing your family memory. Of note:
My sister Frankie carefully counted the amount of turnips in the basket and announced at the next meal how many each of us would have to eat to finish them all.
(Oh my. I'm sure that there weren't many smiles around the dinner table on that night.)
Now turnip pie??? That sounds like an interesting challenge. It would have to have bacon in it too, but I don't know else...probably eggs and flour, cinnamon, nutmeg???
I don't know how your mother got rid of the turnips. Perhaps, she passed them on. Big-teeth smile. Margaret ~ LateBloomer

I'm not sure many people are enthralled with turnips, but I've had them a time or two. Mostly not by choice I might add. Enjoyed your short story. Well defined subject matter, entertaining and complete. Good luck.

Your well-written story reminded me of my experiences with turnips as a child. My mother cooked them with turnip greens and bacon, or she just cooked the plain turnips with bacon. I enjoyed that meal.
I enjoyed your humorous list of possible turnip dishes, especially turnip ice cream. Yuck. Great story.

Thanks. I had fun with that story, not so much with the turnips!

We have had turnip festivals here on Cape Cod, so I guess some people do like them. How awesome that your family had quite the garden, sounds delicious all those veggies! Lovely tale from your childhood here.

What a treasure was your mother, a great ability, to make turnips vanish, she was obviously a magician, and practiced magic, heh heh, I loved this story, we've known pastors who had to make ends meet miraculously, beautifully written, blessings Roy
