Hello Gretchen,
aha, the plot thickens. I hadn't thought anything about spies, but now I'm starting to wonder why Artie is there. Is the area a place that has navy ships passing by, or any kind of military compound around? How interesting. Poor Lester. I never wear short sleeves when I'm in the sun, and I sure don't take my shirt off. I'm lilly white, but I don't care anymore. I can't stand getting sunburned. I've had a few in my time that left blisters, and that's enough for me. Well done gal.
Have a blessed evening.
Tom

I got blistered by the sun once, I was thirteen. Never again. I try to stay out of the sun. Thank you for this awesome review. I'm so glad you are enjoying this. Means a lot. Gretchen

Lester is suffering for his summer of fun (sunburn), but seems to really enjoy being with Heddy. He has made Heddy uncomfortable with his questions about Artie. Good plot point in a well-written story.

We all remember those special days of summer when life seemed so full and neverending. What a wonderfully written story. Best of luck with your writing! Have a great day, and God bless.

Sunburns are not pleasurable, but vinegar is an old remedy that tended to help ease the burn.

Building sand castles fun, but as you said "they don't last long" before waves destroy all that hard effort placed into constructing them.

Seems Lester threw a temper tantrum in response to his sand castle's demise when he tossed sand into the sea and said "Here. You might as well take all of it.". Would change the . at the end of this sentence to an ! for emphasis.

In one place you wrote "U boats.". In others you wrote "Uboats.". Should be U-boats.

Dialogue sounds like something two youngsters of their ages would say to each other.

U-boats and pirates, vivid figments of youthful imaginations.

LOL. I can almost picture this conversation and the assumptions. Even as we age, we have to keep our imaginations in check to keep from flying off into "Never Never Land." Thanks for sharing.

This is a great chapter, and it seems the friendship between Heddy and Lester is blossoming. I know there must be plans for the grandmother's appearance in future chapters. I was just wondering what happened to her.

Best, JohnC

Lester is quite astute, perhaps more insightful than Heddy in terms of thinking about Artie. Lester and Heddy are relating more easily now. It will be interesting to see what transpires with Artie.

Heddy sees the good in people despite snooping around. She doesn't realize adults can lie convincingly. Thank you for this. Gretchen

It's funny how children's conversations are different during war time. I saw a Russian U-boat in the dock when I was on one of my sailing excursions in Europe around five years ago, and I did wonder what it was doing there. I was mistrusting of its intentions. I enjoyed your fine chapter as these two are content in each other's company and Lester is observant about Archie. Always a pleasure to read your work Gretchen, love Dolly x x x

You have true feelings for your writing that stand out right away. These days, my reviewing is slow. I am
hibernating. My pain is such that I am taking my aspirin whenever I wake up after fours or more of sleep. I am keeping track of my dosage times. Then, I drink some liquid, eat a pouch of tuna, and crawl under my heated blankets and pads. Off to sleep I go, Karen :-)

Since Artie doesn't seem to want anyone to know he is there, he must ge up to something.I guess the know the reason at some point. I think it would be ideal to grow near a beach. I'm wondering if this entire story will take place during the time school is out for vacation and if Lester will be going back or he will continue to stay with aunt. I'll wait to find out.

I'm not sure if Lester will be going home at summers end. We will find out together. Thank you for this. Gretchen

I love it when people let me know their characters will decide the stories destination. Some writers have in all in outline form from start to finish. Not me, I like to be surprised by where my writing takes me.

Me, too. I flunked a creative writing course because I couldn't follow a formula. That makes it math, not creative writing. Lol.
