Sometimes we meet new people almost anywhere, but it isn't often that we meet someone who turns out to be a special friend for such a long time. Thanks for sharing.

We do not often click with other people in this way, Ulla. I have to say that it seems meant to be that you met her, and her outgoing personality persuaded you to learn more about her. It sounds like a forever friendship.

bringing back a homemade sandwich and a salad. - Personally, I would steer clear of anything made 'at home' and taken to a deli for sale.
washed down the remnants of my food with some water from my bottle. - All the writing advice I've seen would edit this to : washed down the remnants with water.
A good friend should be cherished as closer than a brother (sister).

Hi Wayne, thank you so much. Believe you me this was truly homemade. It was a wee place run by a wife and her husband. They made the sandwiches and salads out of freshly made food. A rare treat in that part of the world. Here in Southern Europe noone would go for anything less. A great friendship evolved which will be described in the next part. Thanks again. Ulla:)))

It's amazing how two people can meet by chance, and that meeting affects both parties for life. Your new friend had a whole set of experiences you knew nothing about, which made the friendship more interesting. I look forward to reading how the friendship had an impact.

This posting is probably best considered an introduction providing background for what may be forthcoming when the world of a Hilton Hotels' employee chanced to meet the "deputy head of her school for disabled children."
The first sentence is an interesting hook "that all came down to chance." The encounter led to a twenty-four year friendship, as well as to proposing what roads that friendship may have traveled down during that time.
In the second paragraph, you use the word "quickly" twice in the first sentence. The second occasion is redundant and the word could easily be deleted without any loss to the quality of the sentence.
When a person thoroughly enjoys their job it can be simple to detect their passion and excitement for the labor. These can also make their job seem interesting to somebody they talk to, even in a worksite's "recreation room."
Making the "heads and deputy heads had to go out in the real business world" a good way for them to get a glimpse of what actually lies out there so they can better prepare their students to enter that arena.
In the paragraph beginning "A quick look at my watch..." you use the words "quick/quickly" three times in a two sentence paragraph. This tends to make them repetitive.
Unintended or not, the frequent use of the word "quickly" in this short posting causes its tempo to race.
This premise could become an intriguing literary work.

We would like to know more. It is an interesting side to teaching. Here in Raleigh there is an organization that runs a coffee shop at the farmer's market that is staffed by developementally challenged kids. So this kind of experience is great for them to enter society. estory
