I've read about Ruby Bridges before, but your 5-7-5 poem with the Norman Rockwell artwork really shows how difficult it was for her and what a price her family paid for their courage. Well presented Heather,
cheers,

You're always so generous, Valda. Thanks so much for reading and for the extra star.

Excellent poem about Ruby Bridges and racism. After all these years, we still have racism in America. It's shameful.
I pray Trump will not win the presidency, he is a racist and bigot.... among other things.
Good syllables count and connection between lines. The presentation is perfect. I love that Norman Rockwell painting. He was such good painter.
Well done

I love the painting too. And our political ideas are very similar. The problem is there are many Americans who don't seem to agree with us. :)
Take care,

This is a well written 575 if you have presented for the contest and I wish you the very best in the contest, I only have one problem with it you need to make your text color very light color on the black background because the red just does not show up for those of us who have vision problems. Patricia.

I might try to increase the size of the font, because the red is very important for me here (blood, tomato splatters...) x

Thank you for posting this. I'm the same age as Ruby Bridges, and grew up in the south. Segregation came to my Florida school a little later in 1967; and it was not like this thankfully. This was the worst case scenario for sure. I was an athlete, and ran track with black and white girls. The same for singing in the school chorus. However, churches and communities remained black and white. My best friend and I did an English paper on negro spirituaism in America. We attended an all black church for a few Sundays in order to write the paper. The congregation and leadership received us with open arms. It was one of the most defining experiences of my teenage years. I made an A+ on the paper, but more than the grade, my eyes were opened to so much I had never known. Thank you again for sharing, Maria, and my very best for the upcoming contest.

Hi Heather,
This is a sad story of the times of the beginnings of integration. Discrimination and racial hatred should be gone by now. But, sadly, it isn't.
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Happy St. Patrick's Day.

I'll never understand all the horrible things people do, and how they can mistreat anyone, much less children, and for reasons that make no sense. Thanks for sharing.

-Thanks for sharing the iconic artwork, the presentation, and wonderful notes, Heather.
-You could have made a good story from those. I haven't stopped to think about Ruby so I am glad you brought her to our attention. She is four years younger than I am.
-You wrote a very good poem about her situation.
-I didn't think about the significance of her white dress.
-A good contrast in line two, and a very good closing line.
-A very good entry; good luck in the contest.

This 5-7-5, Ruby on Black and White, has the proper formatting and leads the readers into the full-blown story of Ruby's daunting experiences during that volatile time.

Maria, this is excellent. The image of Ruby in white dress, socks, and shoes with "nigger" behind her and the tomato splattered against the wall is such a stark image. I've always loved this Rockwell painting, and his bravery for painting it.
I recently read that haters showed up outside the school for two years, hounding her every day. What a brave little girl she was.
I don't normally give six stars to short poetry, but this hits home in a few words and perfectly describes the accompanying image. Well done! Good luck in the contest.

So then I have to thank you twice for the six stars. It's true that short poetry always seems lacking unless it's excellent (some people here are great at it). I don't think mine is very good, BTW.
Like you, I've always loved Rockwell and this painting is my favourite. The topic of racism is one that also touches me deeply.
Take care,
xxx

I can't imagine that poor little girl walking day after day through such harassment and cruelty. And here we are over sixty years later, still facing the injustice and prejudice because of someone's skin.....and deeper than that.... because some feel they are better than others...till the day they stand before the our LOrd.
Hugs, Carol

Thanks for your insightful review, Carol. We should have got over all this nonsense and cruelty by now. xxx
