I'm late! I read this poem and was awed by your sense of poetry, John, your rhythm is perfect. The words, they are so thought provoking. It's an argument of minds. Good between evil, who comes out the winner. It's so easy to be good, yet these days there is so much evil around that it feels like the good is losing. I'm very impressed, my friend, you should write a lot more poetry. Warmest hugs! Sandra xx

I love this eye-catching image and how your fine verse reflects the force and rant of those masks (perhaps a reference to the source of the image?) You've really poured heart and soul into this verse and I applaud you for stirring up your reader with passion as the forces of good and evil come into powerful conflict. Neither will prevail as the subject rejects this 'duo' and falls, instead, into an ever darkening realm of madness. My favourite stanza is the second from the bottom. It seems to sum up all the rest beautifully. I also love Sunday best-thoughts (very Dylan Thomas). This is excellent, John. It requires more reading than just my two, such is the depth of imagery and philosophical thought. Well done! Debbie

Thank you, Debbie, for the great review. I did like that stanza as well. It did bring the summation home. Thank you again!

I feel a search here. I was pulled back and forth as I read. The struggle is clean and clear. What is the real story? And will we ever know? Maybe we are not meant to know.

Hi John. To me, life is about us to learn what is to be good/kind and what is to be bad/unkind. It's as simple as that. And good has to win anyday. I don't even think religion comes in to that. At least, I don't need religion to teach me that simple rule. Thank you so much for sharing. I loved your well written poem. Ulla:)))

As I've often said, when it comes to poetry, I wouldn't know a sonnet from sorbet. But this vivid poem bores deep into the minds of all those who have ever been mislead or have doubts. Thanks for sharing.

I know you're not a big fan of poetry, Ric! I'm simply grateful that you read and comment anyway. Big hugs, my friend! Be safe!

Brilliant theme. Showing the dark and light we understand through stories and fables. The Bible is a maze, if you have the key the Book becomes your destiny. But man has made his own rules, teaching lies about the Lord and beating his chest when a seeker believes made-up stories. God inspired the Bible, so it says. All Jesus asked was "Follow me." The darkness will pass when Satan is chained for 10,000 years. Evil begets evil. Well done! K xx

This is a story of the battle of good and evil that not only rages in the world but also in soul of many. Even many of those who desire to be on the side of God, Satan still tempts. There is the on-going battle in ever life although those who are sincere are are able to overcome the evil with Gods help. Even some saints in the Bible admit to fighting this battle daily. Then there are the true hipocrites that know they aren't on God's side, but pretend to be for person gain. It think the poem is well written and something to think about.

religion can confuse people and force them to ask uncomfortable questions. I can understand the see-saw between belief and non belief. This is a kind of rant coming from desperation ..I feel a little more clarity would have helped the reader...

Your poetry is so deep - I always read it slowly and more than once through. Your absent muse was clearly present and participating when you wrote this ultimate battle between good and evil for one man's soul.

There are lies and hypocrisy in the church, and I often wonder if God even resides there anymore (of course, I don't mean ALL churches).

The struggle is real, and what a picture you paint of that struggle for one man. The paragraph that begins, "I join in hyme-His house of prayer . . ." Madness caused by the pulling between good and evil.

Other than six stars, I'm giving you a WOW! rating on this one. I can go back and read it again and find things that I missed in the first two readings!

You continue to grow as a writer, and your poetry rocks!

That is a very deep and honest one. It seems that someone is struggling to find and retain faith but is plagued by the devil and demons twisting and distorting truth so he ends up caught, not knowing which side he's on or if his faith is real. Very thought-provoking piece with very vivid and sometimes frightening allusions.
