Hello, Gretchen,
This chapter slipped by me, I'm afraid!
But I enjoyed it immensely.
I so appreciate the ease with which you write and draw the reader in to your plot and characters.
Marvelous writing

Thank you for sharing!
Fondly,
diane

If Arte was a spy, he certainly wouldn't be hiding away from the world. But what a position to be in. And then there is Lester. What a nasty aunt he has, I'm sure his mother would be so unhappy to know what's happening to him. But how can he get away from her and go to Heddy's mother? So sad. And now we are waiting for Willis to come home. Lots going on in this one, Gretchen! Well done, I'm really enjoying this story. :) Sandra xx

I think Artie is Harmless as Heddy believes, but others might not think so. We shall see. Thank you for this excellent review and the great feedback. Gretchen

This good writing. She asks grown up questions. Lester is in a bad fix. It is hard to know what to do. Him knowing he can come to you gives him an out if things get bad. Karen

Thanks, Karen. Heddy is pretty smart. She's a watcher and her questions hopefully reflect that. Appreciate your feedback. Gretchen

Hello Gretchen,
I've met people like Lester's aunt before. They are miserable and there doesn't seem to be anything that can bring them out of their self-induced misery. There may be an underlying reason for being that way, but most people don't want to get to know people like that to find out why.

It irritates me to no end that this lady would hang on to mail that should be forwarded. I suspect that in a different time, she could be fined or jailed.

That was an interesting twist on Artie. Well done gal.
Have a blessed evening.
Tom

Mrs. Collette is quite a piece of work. She will show an even uglier side soon enough. I'm so thrilled about your review. Thank you so much. Gretchen

Sometimes, things are not as they seem, but it isn't always easy to figure out what you're going to believe or not. People tell us to live by faith, believe in what we cannot see, touch, or feel. "Faith of a mustard seed." It's a hard, but real choice. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Ric. You're right. Faith with things are going good is easy. When times ain't so good ... a tad tougher. Gretchen

Mrs. Collette is a monster. Arte is a hero because he won't return to Germany although he was probably sent to America with his parents after being indoctrinated into the Hitler Youth (Hitler's answer to Boy Scouts). Heddy certainly has a problem.

Thank you, Carol. Artie is torn between two world. He loves America but his family is still in Germany. And yes, Mrs. Collette is a cold hearted woman. I appreciate your input. Gretchen

This is a very poignant chapter seen through Heddy's lens. She's normally so happy go lucky but losing Lester as a friend, coupled with her worries about Artie seem to have clouded over any joy she might have been feeling at the prospect of Willis coming home. One edit noted: No child wants to leave their home and come to (a) place... Another excellent, beautifully expressed chapter, Gretchen. Take care Debbie

Heddy is a wise little girl and has sensitivity. He believes Artie because she senses he's a good man. I hope she's right. If so, poor Artie. I hope he doesn't get caught if he's innocent.

I believe Artie is a good person. He's trying to fly under the radar so to speak. Thank you so much for the awesome rating. Gretchen

This is good. You've added another dimension to this story and a bit of history. It is a time when being a German citizen and living in this country would be regarded with a lot of suspicion and maybe imprisonment. It is also sad that Lester is being put in a position when he isn't being allowed to be a child. There may come a time when he runs away from the postmistress.

I think Lester's uncle might let Lester come visit. He seems to have a little more humanity than Mrs. Collette. Thank you for this nice review. Gretchen

The ending breaks my heart but I'm happy Artie and Heddy found each other. It's hard to love and embrace someone you think is an enemy. Hitler was a monster and the soldiers who followed his orders without remorse, but not all Germans are bad. That type of bigotry divides people.

I'm enjoying the story. I hope Lester leaves his aunt but it would be hard.

Well done!

Hoping Artie doesn't get caught. People like the Collettes would tar and feather him. Thank you so much for this awesome review. Gretchen
