A novel of knowledge in a single poem. Covering thoughts of not only your own, but of the many who've felt similar feelings. I wish I had a six. Outstanding! Thanks for sharing.

I met Maya Angelou in Stockton California at a university event.

I love your poem. It's full of rich imagery that reminded me of Spain in my youth. Your picture is wonderful. You were so pretty.

Well done

Lucky lady! I wish I had met her too.
Was pretty? Not anymore? LOL I'm fatter, that's for sure and I hate it. Just before the pandemic I went on a strict diet and lost 24 kilos, but unfortunately I have put on most of the weight back on. Anyway... you know what's funny: I've never felt pretty and now I realised I was stupid not to enjoy the way I looked when I was younger.
Muchas gracias por leer mi poema. x

A beautiful picture of you Heather, I love the colour blend. We don't have to suffer in life to understand other's who suffer from prejudice and pain, all we have to be is human to have compassion. This is a deeply meaningful and moving poem. We need a little luck in life to add a magical spark to life to make it extraordinary, and as long as we appreciate what we have, and the wonderful life around us, we will always have something to write about. Speaking up for those who have been persecuted, involved in war or who have fallen on hard times is a mission we should all taken on. A fine post Heather, love Dolly x x x

Maya was marvelous, and you do her justice with this poem. Many of us are lucky simply because of where and when and to who we were born, but we can still speak for those who are not as lucky, even if we will never truly understand the extent of their pain.

I love the picture. Make it your profile here so that everyone might know the woman who writes all the beautiful poetry.

    Hi Pam,
To be frank I don't even remember what my profile picture on FS is at the moment. I'll have a look when I have time.
Thanks for your very kind review.
    Take care. x

Good Gravy Lady! You do not need to have been one of the ones almost gassed many moons ago in order to write about the wrongness of it. You not need to be beat to pulp to talk about the wrongness of abuse. You need not hold yourself back from anything. Speak, or things will never change. Karen

I guess that's what writers are born for, don't you think? Not that many people pay attention... but we have to keep on trying. x

I love your wonderful version on this theme, Maria! Inspired and inspiring. I've listened to Maya. Thank you so much for introducing her. And I recognise the mischievous "diamonds at the meeting of my thighs!" This is a great poem of self-affirmation rising out of humility (Garden-variety bard). Superb picture too! Well done, Maria. I always know I'll get something special from you. Sadly, it can only be a virtual six. Take care Debbie x

Your words mean a lot to me, Debbie. Don't worry about the six.
Maya Angelou was wonderful. Have you read any of her prose? I love I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings.

Wow, Maria, you wrote a wonderful tribute poem to Maya. Did she pass away recently or is this something you felt you needed to do?
Either way, I love the style and wordplay of this piece with all of its claims of no claims to any particular culture or race as if it doesn't matter and yes, it doesn't matter does it?
Excellently done.
Jesse

    Hi Jesse,
She passed away ten years ago (I couldn't remember, I just checked), but when I read her biographical I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, I realised she was special.
    Thanks for your kind review.

We can all relate and be content to be "garden variety bards". Yet God sees so much more beauty because He has created each of us and He sees much more than your beautiful hazel eyes. He knows your soul. And after our time here, we will all "rise" to meet Him.
