Thanks for sharing your inspiration for this poem.

Breathes spores - are you talking about the mushroom or people who may breathe them (which I know can result in possible lung problems short-term and long)? Retires? Dies? I understand mushrooms can live for hundreds of years.

Sorry I have so many questions. If it's obvious and I've missed the point, don't bother responding. Go write more poetry:-)

Good luck, Mark.

The main part of the fungus lives underground d and as you say can survive for hundreds of years. The mushroom is the fruiting body which is relatively short-lived. The mushrooms release spores I said breath as a metaphor for the wind blowing spores. Thanks for reading.

This is extremely well conceived. With simplicity of language and style, you succeed in telling the story of the complexity of nature. Miraculous, yet so simple. Well done!

You have succeeded in summarising their life cycle in a few words; although it's simple it is also quite intricate and the variety of fungi is enormous. Well written. I wish you success in the contest.

"The Mushroom" Some say early Christians--and Jews--were high on it. I don't know. I don't even like them on my pizza.
Hmm! Do mushrooms produce spores?
Good personification on the second, fifth and last lines.
Good luck in the contest!

Yes, that is how they reproduce, puffballs look amazing in slow motion. Thanks for reading.

It's not often that I have come across a poem about fungi. I really enjoyed the short read as you took us from the very start of the life of a mushroom to its end. A great picture too.

Hi Mark
This poem says a lot in a few words and uses personification well to show the short life of this mushroom.
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Good luck in the contest
Have a great day

Ciao!

I love eating fresh mushrooms in my risotti but I would not dare pick them.

I see many on my autumn walks in my woods ( less in my pine forest) but I know there are also some that are poisonous.

We have a center where people can bring them and an expert will tell you if they are safe to eat.

The spores are cool to watch on film in slow motion

some spout like a sneeze

but others make the same wave movements a storm of swallows perform hours before they migrate. A murmuration.

This is an excerpt from a longer poem I wrote. I described the spores as a nebula. Idea from slow-motion footage.

    A great comparison! ☺️

I am always rewriting and reworking. Turning prose into poetry and visa versa. Creating short from long and long from short. Saves me having new ideas everyday.

When did you start writing poetry/ prose?
reply by the author on 22-Apr-2024
On and off all my life. But I started writing every day, (almost) six months ago.

You not only tried... you succeeded!

Fifteen syllables!

(Where were you when I was struggling to learn about fungi in school...from a five pound textbook?)

They are a little more complicated than their fruiting bodies. Thank you.

I love the image of the mushroom expelling the spores . Like something out of a nature documentary. I could see it happening in slow motion. Very well written. Gretchen

This is an excellent poem Mark, even though the mushroom lives in damp dark places, it can both nourish and poison men, but it has an amazing way of perpetuating itself, well done my friend, blessings Roy
