A very poignant story Ginda,in which you show the confusion in her mind, but the aroma of the coffee, she knows that. Unfortunately a situation many find themselves in with a loved one. Lovely flash fiction story and well told Ginda.
Good luck in the contest,
cheers,
valda

Oh yes, who knows what goes through people's minds when they decide they no longer want to be part of civilisation anymore. Well done Ginda, a wonderful post, seeing another perspective, beautifully written, blessings Roy

This was a great story to read. It was full of empathy and emotion and a shared experience for many. Your imagery and vivid descriptions brought this to life. As a fine artist, too, I can appreciate how you imagined this for us to read. You truly have presented a strong story and message with authentic bits of dialogue too. The image supports your words as well. Best wishes to you, Ginda!

This is a story I can relate to, having watched my wife's mother traverse dementia. It's such a sad thing to watch, but it must be so bewildering to those going through it. She could remember some things vividly, then introduce herself as though we were strangers. So sad.

This is excellent flash fiction because (1) you set the scene so well with Mary smelling the coffee, the only reality in the foggy world in which she dwells, (2) the backstory of something happening in Italy and Anna's surprising voice, (3) the ending where the reader realizes Anna is suffering from dementia or some other mental illness, and (4) your simple, straight-forward style of writing. I can certainly relate to this one. My husband and I cared for his mom in our home for four years. She had Alzheimer's and it took her life. Wonderfully written for the flash, my friend. Sending you my best today as always and best wishes for the upcoming contest.

"almost confortable" - change to comfortable

Oh, this is one fear that many of us share. I've thought about it a lot lately, as I realize some of these moments when I have to stop and think about what I'm doing and where I'm going.

An accurate look at the lives of some unfortunate ones that you've written in few words. And the lovely memory of a happy moment in time.

Good luck in the contest.

Thanks for catching the typo. And yes, it is a fear that we all have as we age. Thanks for reviewing.

Very well written flash fiction. Very clever, not spelling it out for the reader but giving clues to be confirmed in the sad ending. Dementia is a cruel and confusing disease. Best wishes for the contest.

Yes, dementia is a cruel disease, and I believe its worse is when they themselves begin to see what is happening.

Wow! This is flash fiction written perfectly. You painted a thorough picture of the effects of dementia in so few words. I thought from the start that this was afflicting Mary,, and your final sentence confirmed this.

Whew! I was afraid that Anna had been killed in the car accident. I guess your story puts a fresh new understanding of the phrase, "Wake up and smell the coffee!" But I don't drink coffee. Decaf tea only. I guess I'll stay in my dreams. Best wishes in the contest!
