firstly, I love that you bring a sense of calm within you optimism. So many of us these days go straight for the jugular, only looking for what is wrong with everything. To do that is a one-way trip to discontentment to the world and all about us... so good on you for keeping the negativity away. I applaud you!
I enjoyed reading your very well written essay Nomi. It's good to have a sense of pride in where one lives, has been raised and grows their life. Well done!

Good for you for writing this. We are getting so much negativity these days from the college students protesting against Israel and obviously hating America. Some of our members of Congress included. I like your positive attitude as you mention the many achievements of Black people. I like to think we've come a long way since the days of segregation, but there are those who want to live in the past. Sometimes I believe America is paying the price for being too generous. A huge number of Indians have gone to US on work visa. They will then get green cards followed by citizenship After this they bring their parents and see that they get citizenships..!
some parents even work there .I know people who have comfortable income here becoming citizens in US ..They all get medical insurance too.
Every country will one day or another face this problem of too many immigrants...,

There are those however, who feel that the entire Earth is their home and they may live wherever they choose, or at the very least, wherever they are allowed to live. What can you do? Speak too loudly and you are labelled a racist. Say nothing at all and you are labelled a fool.

You also go a good job with our early history as a country. I like how you include the wrongs that were done, but also give examples of what has been accomplished. It doesn't make those things right by any means, but I am thankful that those who came before us did the best they could to build this up this young country.
Like any nation there is the bad with the good, but you point out how bad things would have been had Hitler created nuclear weapons first. In addition, we did mistreat those who were different when first trying to settle this land. Eventually, we tried to be better. Nothing is going to be perfect, but it is the effort, offering opportunities, and not putting someone down because they are different.
You also make a good point about religion in various sectors. Many of our early wars and conflicts were because of religion. I agree with the points in your conclusion. I do not condone what was done in the past, but as a teacher I tried my best to use the literature we had to get across different kinds of people and how they should be treated. I also agree that I am proud to be a citizen of this country. Thanks for sharing it and opening up discussions. Have a good evening and rest of your week.

Thank you. While I touted the accomplishments of people of color, I by no means intended to exclude the merits of others. I was simply trying to show that despite our rocky start in this country, we still were able to contribute to its growth and advancement.

Thank you so much. Although i excluded other great Americans in favor of black Americans, my intention was to show that despite difficulties, we all have for the most part been able to thrive because of the opportunities that America provides to us all.

Thank you for your thoughtful contributing suggestion. I was somewhat overcome with passion when I wrote this. I usually subject my essays with numerous edits. Passion was in control at the time of this writing. I will take into consideration your helpful suggestion.

I was meant to find such an inspiring and used lifting poem from a man I respect, who has served this great country!
It's become quite commonplace to bash our shortcomings.
Ah, but no country is without them and America has, as you point out, righted its course to give many a forgotten citizen opportunities not found elsewhere!

Sounds like an ordinary day to me. I still think that religion is used like a club here sometimes. And, people need to keep their noses and everything else out of my body. No one but me can and should have the only say in what happens to my body. If I want to have an abortion,or have a hysterectomy at age 21 or have my boobs and kneecaps switch places, that is entirely my concern. Karen :-)
