Since I am from Texas, I can tell you we are a darn sight more cosmopolitan than we were. I live in Plano which is right outside Dallas now. I am still moving and unpacking. Good story. Karen

Thank you Karen. Everywhere is more cosmopolitan than it once was but too me Texas had far outgrown what I was used to in Mississippi. I loved Texas and didn't want to leave.

I have been t mississippi and it looked poor. brown lawns. a lot of empty stores. Texas is known for it's independence and progress. After all we had Texas instruments. Nasa, and Rice university."-)

Thank Dolly. I appreciate the review and congratulations. It took a while but it is hard to believe I've written that much. I think I did have a good childhood. It wasn't perfect but it could have been a lot worse.

Congratulations on your 1000th post, Beth!!
I'm glad you survived the mosquitoes. Even then you had such an adventurous spirit and enjoyed traveling! Too bad the mission to stop the divorce couldn't happen but a sister can't really do that much in those affairs.
You probably already fixed as I brought this post up intending to review sooner:
I followed my noise into the kitchen (nose)
but It must not have been very potent, because It (it)

Thank you Helen. Mom should have known she couldn't stop the divorce. Alene was the girl next door when she Newman wre growing up but she was actually serveral years older than him. He didn't find a marriage that lasted until he got to number four. I won't have another milestone until number 500 more.

Another very interesting story, and it shows up the many societal changes from that time to this. This chapter and indeed the whole book will be a great legacy for future generations. Well done.

Congratulations on Milestone Post # 1,000! Wow. Just take a minute to breathe that in, Beth!
Your stories of family are always so compelling! I'm instantly drawn in, and your details are shared in such a familiar and conversational way I "see" through your (six-year-old) eyes.
Life was so much less complicated back then...
I really enjoyed this!

Kids today cannot imagine how life was back in our days. Tom Sawuer and friends had nothing on us, as injuns hid behind every tree, and every forest was where Rama plied his trade. Bike rides needed no helmets, and recess was from dusk to dawn whenever kids weren't in school.

Thank you Tom. This Texas neighborhood was more like the one you grew up in. I had not real neighbors, just some house scattered out iwith adults living in them.

This is such a relaxing and joyful story about your youth and getting away from home for a bit. Yes, being with kids and family in a pleasant environment is cool.

I just love this kind of post. I love hearing about people's childhoods. Life stories of regular people are my favorites. Your story was very interesting and I love that I got enough of your family's personalities to make a picture in my head. Alice Carolyn was quite a picture. lol. Very interesting read. Thank you for sharing. Gretchen

Thank you Teri. I loved the trip to Texas but I actually saw more lightening bug at home in Mississippi. We didn't have truck spraying the air for mosquitoes which kills lightening bugs as well. We didn't have city lights around either so our view of stars in Mississippi was amazing.

I bet seeing those beautiful stars was really amazing! I didn't like it when the bug person came around spraying. lol
