Wow, this was intense, I enjoy your stories and believe that house was set on fire on purpose, what the hell is wrong with people, you could have all been killed,

You story is interesting in that you are open and honest about your life in a southern state. I already know that there was probably a branch of the KKK in Mississippi at that time. I've seen horror movies of the types of things that happened.

My father was a member of a group called The American Woodman, in the big city of Philadelphia, in the fifties. He was also a Mason, I know that as kids, my sisters and I heard bits and pieces of things adults talked about. This chapter of your book reminded me of things I never would have thought about ever again. Interesting. Great chapter.

Yes, I sure there were many members of the KKK in Mississippi. I never knew if it was active in Newton, the town I lived in, but I didn't live far from the town the movie Mississippi Burning was written about. I'll have to check into The American Woodman maybe it wrong about the name of Grandpa group.

I may be wrong with the name of my father's group. We lived in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

There is such a group and I think it is nationwide. It sounds like the group my grandfather described and said he was a member. He died just before 1960.

I guess there genuinely is a difference here and in England regarding guns, the only guns I knew were a friend of dad's had a .22 caliber rifle and went hunting rabbits, and a man who culled wild goats in the Flinders mountains did, but never knew anyone else who owned a gun, different mentality I guess, we have burglars and violent people too, well done, what an experience for a child, blessings Roy

When the settlers from Europe came to this country the natives weren't always friendly and the government wasn't set up to protect them. People needed weapons to survive for food and from enemies. It was written into our constitution that we had a right to have them, and we been fighting to keep that clause in the constitution since then.

We likewise, were a frontier nation,

I'm sure everyone had guns back then. Did you have the right to own them in you constitution? The gun lobby keeps that argument alive.

Thank you for sharing this post with us. I'm sure it was a difficult post to write, but an important one.

We returned home late in the afternoon to find our Kitchen window screen had been cut and the glass was shattered (kitchen)

I truly enjoyed this chapter. The two teachers had very similar names. It was interesting reading about the vigilantes. They are part of the plot element in many of the westerns made in the thirties and forties. At least they got thing done, though I know I couldn't torment a young boy. I think today such groups would give into their egos and torment and destroy just for the fun of it.

Another good chapter in your story, Beth. Your note was interesting. You never mentioned in the story the kid was black, and it wasn't necessary to. Handling justice based on skin color is just wrong. Will you be telling us more about that incident and the aftermath?

Thank you Jim. Actually I told all I know. My family didn't want to talk about and I didn't get all my questions answered. Maybe they thought telling me would get me upset.

It's a very true statement, Beth. Thieves come in all colours. But I know exactly how you felt after the burglary. It is a violation. Not only against your things but you. I have been burgled a few times in my life. So I know.
It was really tough luck you should mention the would burn down, and the it actually did. Oh dear. I'm enjoying reading this. Ulla xcx

Thank you Ulla, It was scary for me knowing someone had been in my bedroom going though all my things. No one every broke in another house I lived in but ring of thieves stole parts from our car in New Orleans.

This is a well written slice of your life from the 1940s and I enjoyed listening to it. It goes along very well your sentence structure and your paragraphing as well done. May you have a very blessed day and may your weekend be good. Patricia.

I can't imagine what it must be like to lose everything in a house fire, how terrifying. I do know what it feels like to be burgled though as people tried breaking into our house whilst my husband and I were in bed early one morning. Evidently they were high on drugs at the time. My husband was a police officer and he coordinated the troops to arrest the thieves by keeping quite and communicating with the controller at the Police station. The fingerprint team lost the evidence and they got away with the attempted burglary. We had extra locks fitted after that and I never slept easy for months.

Mississippi sounded rather lawless as you were growing up Beth and taking the law into your own hands can be very dangerous, I enjoyed your story, thank you for sharing this with us. Love Dolly x

THank you Dolly. To have thieves high on drug when you are actually in the house would really be frightening. I apprevciate your review.

That's scary. I feel sorry for that boy having to tell on his brother. But what if it wasn't his brother, would he have been killed for not knowing? That's an awful thought. While I can understand the need for a vigilante group (I prefer neighborhood watch group!), I can't understand kidnapping a kid and threatening him to get information. But I'm glad that the real culprits were caught and that the rifles were returned. What an ordeal!

Thank you Helen. I was sick over thinking how frighten that poor kid must have been. I'm sure the law would have never been able to do anything and they apparently perferred people handle their own problems. It was a while before I got over that.
