He who does not contemplate the dangers involved in trying to break an unbroken horse, may very well wind up with a broken spirit as well as a broken body. Better beware Billy.

The horses I have ridden were saddled and happy to support a teenager. No horses since then, and nobody is complaining.

Not as dumb as I might have thought you were.

Hi Bill,
Once a cowboy, always a cowboy.
"Our squad leader noted that, luckily, the ground broke his fall." ... (I wonder just how high the mustang bucked the Marine? What goes up must come down.)
It's a lack of respect on both sides, horse and rider. I'm sure the Marine learned his lesson very quickly. But it will take much longer for the mustang.
Nicely penned, Bill!
Cheers,
Kimbob

Thank you, Kimbob. As I recall, and it's been forty years, he was launched and went straight back to his back. The horses were all starving and smaller.

Hmm, yes, I am sure the ground did break his fall. A humorous ending to your story - but I am sure he did not appreciate the humour of the squad leader at that time. Well done.

This is a good flash story. I love that smart alec comment. Something that break that fall. It's a good thing is was the ground. Without it being there he might have kept right on going.

I used to gauchos but they never gave me the ability to stay on a horse. Thanks for sharing. --------------------------------------------------------

The gauchos go on the horse, of course.

When b-westerns were in vogue, the term "gaucho" was well-known. Now, not so much and I won't make any puns about being a Marx Brother. Thank you for this humorous tale enlightening us on this breed of men.

Lol. Well, I guess the squad leader could say it that way because the poor dude didn't break any bones, at least, I hope not! That's pretty dangerous stuff! Did they wear wide, floppy pants because I wear "gauchos."

Straw hats and loose clothing, as I recall from forty years ago.

I won't add straw hats to my attire...but I like gauchos with pockets.
