This is a very well written poem, and I enjoyed listening to it. Throughout the years and throughout the decades, and throughout the centuries man has always had things that he has used as idols, and the Christmas tree is probably one of those as well. I don't know that people today use it as an idea but I suppose some might. Patricia.

I must admit to loving Christmas and the beautiful lights and decorations. I can't believe that God would want us to live in a bleak world. If that were true, he wouldn't have given us so much beauty in nature. Instead, we can enjoy the trinkets and lights and thank the Lord for blessing us with its beauty. I have a huge nativity scene outside and also one on my fireplace, but I have the tree and lights, too. Doesn't change my feelings about God. Life is meant to be celebrated. I hope I don't offend others with these thoughts.

I agree with your thinking - it is just one more thing where Christians have tried to compromise. Most believers don't worship the tree but I know what you mean. I see the rabbits, and eggs, and Santa Claus, the excessive feasting, and Halloween as being worse distractions though in terms of losing the priority and focus of what should be meaningful to Christians - the Lord Himself and all He has done.

So, a Christmas tree is neither a good nor bad thing is what you're saying? Just don't focus on it as the light of the season rather than Him? That's what I took away from this poem.
I did not know Martin Luther was responsible for the name.
Thanks for sharing, Roy. Perhaps I end up with my own meanings, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I've always heard that poems mean different things to different people.

I remember when we first married, my husband didn't want to have a Christmas tree because it was associated with pagan religions of the Germanic peoples. I guess over the years, he accepted it would be okay but the focus has to be on Christ not the tree.

This is an interesting story about the Christmas tree. It brings joy and pleasure to people at Christmas time and is a fixture in the scene. I hadn't heard of the Martin Luther connection. I had no idea the Christmas tree went back that far. Quite a history! Same thing with the scarecrows. The description of it is humorous--no legs, can't walk, treated like a pet. Very engaging and informative. May the tradition of the Christmas tree continue. Excellent presentation and rhyme. judi

You have zeroed in on one of the contemporary modes used for celebrating Christmas. A lot of people who have Christmas trees don't know why they have one. It has become a secular holiday to Many. The one thing I do is I put a lighted angel that is over 70 years old, on top of our tiny plastic tree. I keep it because it came from my grandmother.

Years ago when my daughter was little we decided to stop having Christmas trees but my daughter didn't understand. She loved and still loves Charlie Brown and the peanuts cartoons. So we started going to a tree farm each year and finding the ugliest little christmas tree like Linus did and bringing it home with us. We would set up a manager scene under it and put our gifts elsewhere. It continues to this day on the years when my daughter can join us for the holiday. Thanks for sharing.
