This free verse, Depression, touches on that one affliction that leaves no apparent marks but separates us from friends and family quite easily. Knowing it exists and can be understood, is the biggest step forward.

Hi Bill,
Depression and other mental health illnesses need to be put out there for all to see without the stigma. My son suffers from depression and it breaks my heart that I can't help him. I understand his hell.

Yes, I suffered with it briefly when I was only a teenager, my first had dumped me, my best friend had committed suicide, I'm an optimist by nature, but nobody listened in those days, I'm not sure they do today, beautifully written Cecilia, blessings Roy

Depression is so difficult to deal with. Clinical depression is a debilitating disease. I appreciate your comments and your descriptive narrative through the poem describing the feelings and the impressions. It takes courage to write about one's self, Especially if it deals with something as serious as this. Glad to see from your notes that you are managing and doing well. I wish you the best.
Robert.

Robert,
Thank you for the kind review. In toady's world depression shouldn't be a stigma still. Like the one verse says, "The struggle is real" true story.

It us difficult to just get over something that is inherent in our genetic makeup. As you have aptly pointed out, all we can do is manage those feelings that can easily overwhelm us. I'm glad you're doing fine. And it's good to talk about your feelings openly.

June,
Thank you for your kind review. I have lived with depression off and on for the last 40 years. I'm not ashamed and I could careless if theres still a stigma out there. People need to be educated on the fact that it's a chemical imbalance and we didn't wake up and decide to depressed, or did we? (ha, ha)

I think this poem is a very good contest entry. I certainly believe that it portrays how a person feels when suffering from depression. Fight or die is the catch cry. It is not always easy to reach that decision.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Barry,
Thank you for the feedback. I understand completely how people choose suicide. I chose to fight and am glad I did. Life has a lot more choices then the alternative.

I have gone through bouts of depression and your poem spoke to me, I think the last stanza helped me the most: "The struggle is real. Depression sucks your life away You toy with your options Fight or die?" Fight, for sure.

Hi,
Thank you for the kind review. I hope this poem will resonate with people struggling. Life is worth living even through the storms of depression. I hope it brings awareness to people who don't suffer and may have that friend or family member who suffers. It's a silent battle sometimes.

I'm really happy for you that your depression is being g managed ans you are feeling good today! This poem brilliantly expresses the depth of depression and how dark it can get and how a person who is depressed can easily hide it.
I teach my kids to always be kind because no matter what you just don't know what is going on in someone's life behind frown or a smile. Well done and it fantastic you can put pen to paper share with us all!
Best Wishes
Nicki

Hi Nicki,
Thank you for your kind review. A lot of people are ashamed to talk about it, because they don't want to be labelled. That's the problem with our society they shun mental illness. They need to learn that it is a chemical imbalance in the brain. Thank you for teaching your children to be kind to others.

Yes i totally agree. Our community had set up a group of local people, docors, sports trainees etc to open up the doors of 'talking' to take the stigma out of having mental health issues. My eldest daughter who is 25 suffered from anxiety as a teenager and struggled through the years on and off since. Mental health is a very open conversation in our home. I wish you the very best x

Nicki,
I'm sad your daughter had to suffer from anxiety. I have a son who suffers and it's hard to get medication for it. Mental Health needs to be a conversation in everyone's household.
-
Yes it does, it's sorry to hear your son suffers too. The pressure on young people especially these days with social media etc. It can be a scay world, take care x

Your poem helps me understand depression on a much deeper level. Your one line is so poignant. "It sucks your life away." I can't imagine how that must feel or how friends and family can help other than just being there. Thanks for sharing. gayla

Hi Gayle,
Thank you for your kind review. Sometimes, having family around isn't enough. I have a son that suffers from severe depression to the point of wanting to die. I have been where he's at and I understand, but I am unable to fix him. As a mother it saddens my heart. He is back on meds and doing better, but I worry a lot about him.

My heart goes out to you and your son. gayla

Depression is a worldwide epidemic. Thankfully it is also an issue that we are more open to talking about. Mental health is affecting so many people. Thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts.

Hi,
Thank you for your kind review. I believe it is an epidemic, however, there is still a stigma attached to it and I believe that's why a lot of people don't talk about it. We as a world need more education to take that stigma away. It's not like those of who suffer woke up one morning and decided we'd burden ourselves with it.

The poem highlights the numerous challenges and struggles around people with depression, a story only them can perfectly tell. Thanks for sharing, and I pray that you and others in the same shoes experience the needed healing. Warmest regards, dear Cecilia.

Thank you kindly for your review. I just want to bring awareness to the struggle of depression. Those of us that have it aren't always in the depths of despair on a daily basis. However, I have been at the brink of where this poem goes. I am on a cocktail of antidepressants that keep me stable. Depression is a taboo subject still in 2024 and it's sad. Again thank you for the review.
