I always get a chuckle out of your writing. Who would guess a bloody killing, rape, and hanging could still make me laugh. You have a perky way of writing that is dang gum fun to read. gayla

Your stories are always fun. Lester. Hmmm. Hanged. Hmmm. Bad guy. Hmmm. I won't make assumptions except he was a real jerk (putting is lightly). I really enjoyed this story. You have a knack. I have one comment: "He is Joshua Micheal Jones. He goes by H.Q. Jones. Mercury goes by M.M. Jones. Josh is Josh." You have two "he's" in a row and the second one is confusing. Chan it to "Hardly goes by H.Q. Jones." and the confusion is quickly cleared up. Thanks for sharing your story, Karen, and have a wonderful day. Frank

I fixed it, thanks for the edit. Read "Mirror, Mirror" it will crack you up. Not bad for first try at a western Short story. It only took two years! :-) Karen

Hi Karen,

Such a fun story to read. It was a bit difficult to keep track of so many characters for a short story, but they each had a unique story and name that kept it interesting.

two boys had already taken several pot shots (potshots is one word) at him and his brothers already. (You might want to delete one of the repeated 'already.')

Patricia

So this is the western you spoke about. I like the change of genre and can appreciate the research you put into it. Great names for the brothers too. This is something you can run with now you've introduced them and they seem to have a remunerative future ahead. Well done! Take care Debbie

Sometimes bounty hunting can cost more than a person could make. One needs to be careful in this profession lest discovered and get hunted instead. Thanks for sharing your talent.

I always wondered why if the bounty said dead or alive, and the person was going to be killed upon delivery, the bounty hunters all didn't plug them and make their lives easier? My sister Lynda thinks I am bloody, I said no, I am pragmatic. I just read Heck Thomas. Love the name. Karen
reply by Charles D Ezell on 14-Jan-2025
Heck was something else, he was interested in modern concepts of solving crimes at the time much we have done away with except somethings we now still use.

The Indians were way ahead of us. They read tracks, like we read newspapers. Theyb were the first C.S.I.'s. :-)

I live among the Navajo for almost 3 years. I know these people. The Apache, different story.

I have reviewed you here as Ben Colder I believe. Did you move to Arkansas for the heat? What's the attraction? Texas is awful purty. :-)

I bet those are some good stories. My family has some Kickapoo blood in them. I would venture a guess that most of us would have some Indian in us if we scratch hard enough. :-)

I'm sure that a bounty hunter was compensated better back in those days, your dialogue pulled me into the story and held me throughout the whole story.

You may know that I use quirky names already on my stories, But, when I was researching for this story, I found a trove of them. I made up my own, but some I came across were even more bizzare. I loved watching westerns a lot, but rarely read one. However, I thought it was odd that a bounty hunter going after a "Dead or alive" bounty, wouldn't just shoot the sucker, and make his life, and most other people's life easier.
I tend to be pragmatic about that stuff. :-)

I love the names Hardly and Mostly, Most imaginative, I love your style, you have your tongue stuck firmly in your cheek, a logical choice for Hardly to keep on being a bounty hunter, it pays well, and you can shoot the bounty if you don't like them, well done, blessings Roy

I grew up on watching westerns. But, I only read Elmore Leonard, and Larry McMurtry. I have been trying for two years to write a western. You may remember "Juanita" My very short Flash story about her unique way of solving her clothing crisis., But that was it. So, I started researching information, on old California, 1850. Thoughts began to form. My muse has been most resistant. Anyhoo, next up is a Biography. Thanks for the read and the kindness. Karen

Hurray for you! You said you'd finish your western story and post it and lickety-split, before mid-January you did it!

You are known for your creative names and you kept them going here...

(Even is a whole lot of bad'uns ended up in the "bone-garden"--as someone told me cowboys used to say)

I see all edits have been offered, and we know narrative writing pleases a lot and others prefer dialogue...

Such is life!

Nice job Karen. Your style is uniquely yours and I love it!

Karenina
