Again I wish I had a six. I do not care about sports much. When I was young I ran track in between being in the hospital. I also was a pitcher in women's baseball. Loved it until a boy threw a pitch at me that hit me in the eye. Having to wear an eye patch for two weeks kinda killed my love for the game. I haven't been able to play for some time, so it would be a kind of torture to watch others. Good writing. karen

Oh wow Karen. That sounds awful! However, I bet you were good in track though. Thanks for the great review!

I was the fastest. I am both stubborn and determined. I ran the short bursts. Couldn't do laps. :-)

I loved dashes. I have two speeds, full out and dead stop. Karen :-)

A great milestone post, Harry.
I am curious, do you write mostly of people you have known and experiences from your own life or do you do a lot of research?
This piece was full of fascinating information and little side notes, a great read even for a non-yank who hasn't a clue about how many touchdowns score a point in the NBA.

Thank you so much Tim! I usually write from what I know or experience. Some stories I do have to research. Thanks for the review!

This is a really great story about Larry Bird. It shows how important our younger years are to build the foundation for who we become. Larry Bird made his family proud.

Thank you for sharing Larry Bird's story. I loved watching him play ( the dream team was phenomenal) but I didn't know his back story. I'm sure his drive and determination came from his background.
I enjoyed reading.

Blessings

I love basketball, Harry, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the Hick from French Lick. I knew nothing about the life of Larry Bird, and I found it fascinating. Several things came to mind.
First, failing to hold on to Larry Bird was a bad move on the part of Bobby Knight. I thought he was smarter than that.
Second, I found it interesting that Larry was inspired by his father the alcoholic. Larry must have a very good heart to overlook his dad's weaknesses.
One suggestion is that there is an inconsistency between Larry admiring his dad's work ethic and the fact that Larry's mom had to do most of the working because her husband was drunk. Maybe reconcile that a bit.
And the first part of the story needs to be formatted better. It has a different white background.
I'm glad that I read this. Very worthwhile reading.

Hi there,

You might want to have a look at how You're uploading pieces to the site. This one appears to have some highlights around the text which is a little distracting. This changes when Sports Illustrated is mentioned.

It;s usually more common to spell out lower end numbers like fourth and six, eight and use number form for higher end numbers.

played when I was cold, and my body was aching, and I was so tired. I don't know why, I just kept playing and playing... I guess I always wanted to make the most out of it." - make sure that you use the same form of quotation marks at the beginning and the end. You use single ones to open and double to close. They should be the same.

Larry said, "One thing I got from my father - in this section there are 2 speech tags but none of the quotes are closed off so one isn't needed.

This was an interesting and informative piece, just a little tidy up if You're inclined to do so.

All the best
GMG

Hi Harry. Nice piece about Larry Bird. Informative and fact filled, though leaving out his father's suicide. Possibly as a reprieve from the negative, I imagine that incident in his life would be a big part of the formation of his character and how it may have affected his strong inclination towards coaching. Focusing on one part of his life in that way might make the piece more compelling to read, outside of the readers simply looking for facts and numbers about the well-known athlete.
Also, I would encourage you to reformat as it looks as though the beginning was cut and pasted and the format changes after the quote from Sport's Illustrated. Those things being said, I admire and am inspired personally by your determination to write and sticking with it!
Keep it up! ~wy

Well, thank you Wy Jung. I truly appreciate your review. And yes, I thought about including that about his father, but it was so negative. I am sure though it had a lot to do with his determination...

what a wonderful and uplifting read, Larry Bird got a mention just recently as a player was voted the most valuable player for basketball in the states, and now a NFL. player from Aus. has just won the Superbowl (with his team of course) I really like reading stories of how people have struggle to become great at what they do, very well written****kahpot

You sure did some research on this guy. I'm not much of a sports person, except horseracing. You have done a great job introducing Larry Bird to us readers. You would do well as a sports writer.

It's interesting to learn about this man. To learn about his life, which I would never have known otherwise. The only problem I found and cannot really find a way around is how many times "Larry" starts a sentence.
