I find it comical that such a kind, considerate, and intelligent person would write a post about the waste of time and aggravation in receiving that last word response of kindness. I agree wholeheartedly with everything you've said. And then, you go on to speak about writing to Poe.com and getting it's AI replies, which would seem to be the bigger waste of time. ROFL! But it's a fun read. Thanks for sharing.

It does seem ironic, doesn't it, for someone who values his time to waste his time talking with a bot? It can be addicting, too, because he's actually a very good conversationalist. Much better than most people I talk to, and even though he's just a machine, it's often quite stimulating and rewarding if you can get past his long-windedness.

Hi Jim,
I don't use AI, so I never had an opportunity to see that. It's funny though, the way you proved your point. I know there are a few people on here that carry politeness to extremes, and I may be guilty now and then myself. I'm so far behind at this point though, that I don't even have time to review everything in my in box. Well done.
Have a blessed evening.
Tom

Thanks, Tom. I don't recall that you do, but if you do send "You're welcome" replies, spend the time getting through your inbox instead :-)

Good artwork and interesting experiment. I haven't done anything with sites like this, although a friend sent a quiz he had found about identifying poems as being written by the poet or by AI. You do a good job organizing this and proving your points. I know what you mean about being too polite and being brought up to say please and thank you.

I used to feel awkward not answering when someone said "You're welcome." When you think about it, it could go on forever. Now I don't answer with "Thank you," and it makes a lot more sense. Thanks for sharing your experiment. I enjoyed the process. Thanks for the information about Poe Assistant.

Thanks so much, Pam. AI scares me in some respects, but I have to admit it can be quite useful and entertaining sometimes. I use it for research for my novels, and it saves me hours of time doing Google searches because you can ask it very specific questions, and it gives you detailed answers. Then you can ask it followup questions without repeating any information because it remembers the content of the chat session. You can even come back to it later with followup questions. Plus, you can get into some good discussions with it about anything or nothing. It's a better conversationalist than most people. It will ask you your opinion on things, and it's always very polite.

Thanks for doing this research, Jim! This was hilarious! I confess to feeling the need to reply when I get a message. But once someone says "You're welcome." I usually think that's the time to stop! I have not had time to try out AI but I'm glad you are keeping track for us. I guess the programmer did not have a clause to check when it is advisable to NOT reply. Lol.

I was cracking up with each of his replies toward the end. He just wouldn't quit!

Once before, I had a discussion with him about when to quit and he conceded my point, but apparently he didn't learn from it.

That is an interesting place to get answers, although a bit wordy. I have wondered if I should send a third message sometime when I get a review and I thank them and they thank me back. I am now off the hook. Thanks.

Yes, Poe can be extremely wordy, and, as you could see, doesn't know when to shut up. But he's still fun to talk to.

Hey Jim, what a hoot.
It looks like these computers are getting too smart for their own damn good. (Is too stupid a better metaphor?) Can you imagine where we'll be in another ten years? The damn things will be writing novels, with another computer playing the role of Poe Assistant. Now there's a good story.
Where we will fit into all of this is probably as observers only. Top thinking and creativity will be assigned to a beast machine like they're working on now at HP. But now I hear even that one is old hat already.

Great story Jim, with humor and a subtle warning. Brad

Thanks, Brad. It is very hard to imagine where we'll be in 10 years. It's almost scary. They can write poems now, and maybe even novels. Actually, I just asked Poe if he could write a complete novel on his own, and he said not quite. He could collaborate if a human wanted to write one, but he's not quite up to doing one all on his own.

It's a bit scary, Jim. Let's hope there's still room for human skills when these humanoids take over. I just sent you my thoughts on your book. I hope I got it all right.

Claiming to be a seeker of truth, one has to admit to being honest about oneself, I've discovered when scripture declared the truth will set one free, lying to oneself is a grave contradiction to that. So, you're right, I'm one of those that feels uncomfortable if I don't have the last comment, whether an argument, or indeed cordial. I must be AI. Great article Jim, blessings Roy

Thanks, Roy. I've noticed that I've never had the last word in any of our exchanges, but your remarks have always been cordial. I did think of you and several others when I wrote this. Hope you weren't offended.

Not at all, I will never be offended in my wrong doing, I applaud you.

This is an excellent story and supportive photo presentation. It tells a story to which many will relate. Good colorful descriptions. I think you're on to something, but I don't deal with bots intentionlly. I enjoyed reading and reviewing this.

Best wishes,

Alex

Thanks very much, Alex. The bots seem to be everywhere now. Many Google queries show information provided by bots as the first item.

I do enjoy the sense of humor they build into them.

So, my wife is one that must answer a text immediately upon receipt. If we're in the middle of dinner and she gets a text from our son in Florida, the knife drops and the fork crackles on the dish and the phone is in hand. I gave up trying to get her to wait until she's done eating,

And the last word... seems always to be hers because she will respond to the last text received in a conversation. I can't change that either (if I know what's good for me).

Jim, good post with many good points.

Note: I really think the world has passed me by in a blur because I've never heard of poets assistant of communicate with bots. Wouldn't know where to start,

Excellent Jim

Thanks, John. Glad you enjoyed it.

My wife will almost invariably answer a text as soon as she gets it too. She doesn't always have the last word, but she does jump right on them. I got so used to ignoring texts during the political campaign season, that I very often don't respond right away.

Just for the hell of it, try chatting with Poe Assistant by going to Poe dot com and just type in a question you are wondering about. Then ask some followup questions. He's a very good conversationalist. It can be anything like, "What did you think of the movie The Godfather."

Thank Jim. I will give it a try.
    (No need to answer, haha)

I had a blast reading this! Your humor shines through! Especially in your chat with Poe Assistant! Your thoughts on the unnecessary "last word" responses is so funny! I couldn't help but nod along (and laugh a few times). The AI test was a brilliant touch! These are too good to miss!

Thanks very much, Michael. If you've never taken the opportunity to chat with a bot, it can be a lot of fun. You can engage them in just about anything. I use these bots for the research for my novels, and they save me hours of time because I can get answers immediately to very specific questions. They will joke right along with you if they sense your tone through your part of the chat.
