Well, it is easier now to understand the complexities you emanate, being a parochial child in the fifties or sixties. I too, am of that race, and found my home in the LDS church. Twelve years I parried with priests, brothers and nuns being smacked on the buns and fingers, with hair being pulled, I credit it in forming the person I became, and he isn't all that bad, fearing (respecting) God, and knowing He lives. I still recall my Latin lessons and being an altar boy. I never was mishandled and hated to hear and read how a few deranged clerics caused the church such harm.

This is a refreshingly honest and original account of your faith, which, of course, IS original and uniquely yours. I not only read your journey but I appreciated all the twists and turns you took in coming to a final conclusion. This was well-expressed, interesting and a great entry for the contest!
Good luck!
Tina

Your story is well articulated and I enjoyed walking along the path with you. Your church history reflects a searching heart, which the Lord always loves. Well done and good luck in the contest, Joan.

Thank you for sharing your spiritual journey. I have never been Catholic so I found it interesting how you say you had to "stick out your tongue" to receive the "host" and later into your hands. I attended Lutheran churches where they used real wine and we received the bread in our hands. I'm glad that in the end of your searching, you found a church home.

Thank you for reading and reviewing my poem, Helen. Until Covid hit we used real wine too. Hopefully that will come back soon.

I can remember saying to someone, that condition is not an act of the law, it's an act of the soul, the receipt of salvation doesn't matter, where or with whom, denominations are nothing to God, there is only one church, the whole body of Christ, the forgiven and repentant and that can be devoid of church building or denomination, it doesn't matter where, the grace of God operates between the repentant and God, beautifully written. That's a really good religious autobiography. It's funny how we vacillate in our religious views. I'll bet that almost everybody has gone through transformations such as this.

To be perfectly honest I did not enjoy this as much as your other poetry I have read. Perhaps the length, I am not at all sure, there just was something lacking.
I found it all very confusing, yet you did still maintain your rhythm. kingskid

    Thank you for your review.

The poem is long because it includes 49 years of life. Maybe it is confusing because the search for faith is confusing, but I tried to keep it year by year and Catholic sacrament by sacrament as they happened to me.

You obviously worked hard at the rhyme and meter of this - but somehow it seems sing-song a bit - I wonder if it's the subject - so much detail might do better in a more free form poem - or if it's the number of syllables or the meter itself that's throwing off my ear. Great story telling.

Thanks for the review and the time you took to read such a long poem. I wrote this in rhyme because it makes me think more of how I feel about the topic when I write in rhyme and I feel this much information in a free verse format would make the poem even longer.

    Thanks again
