This is nice Brooke,
I love the image and visual presentation.
I like the structure of the poem
Nice title.
Good message, yeah, we all mean to do so much, we have to try and squeeze it in before it's too late.
The last stanza is my favorite part.
Good luck in the contest.
Kathryn

This one hits me in the solar plexus.

But when day of departure
for every journey came,
I failed to use my ticket --
no summits can I claim.

This describes so many lives ... in so many ways.

I especially loved the simplicity of these:I meant to be a nomad,
to join a caravan,
to ride upon a camel
through sweeping dunes of sand.

I meant to find a mountain
to climb where eagles soar,
to look upon a vista
no others would explore.

Another perfect little jewel. If I were teaching a poetry class ... I would use you as an example of how to use the forms so well that the writing transcends the form.

Diane, Any poem that hits a reader in the solar plexus makes for a good day for me, especially when it is an astute reader :-) Your comments make my day, week, month and year! Brooke

We could all the say the same, up to a point. We just couldn't say as well, Brooke. This was a great read. It set me to wondering how many of my goals still waited unattained, or dead. Contemplative quatrains, indeed. Good luck in the contest.

Way to encourage the masses to get out and see the world, literally, figuratively, or even just around the corner. My pastor preached on this last weekend, and you've said it poetically, perfectly here. :)
