I was in retail for a while, years ago and managed 115000 sf. The loss by shoplifting is tremendous, and costs the honest patrons a fifty percent markup. The worse two episode was when I saw a suspect enter the first floor lift and a minute later arrive back down with an arm full of $250 suits. I gave chase and he strated throwing one at a time in to the bushes and I recovered all six sets saving Belks $1500 dollars. The other incident was finding a filthy pair of sneakers in a box that was supposedly be a $120 pair of NIkes. Ce bien. The culprit needed them more than we,I guess.

Thank you for the excellent review and stars. An armful of Armani suits? The store you worked for was lucky to have you. I had my own Mrs. Dumont. I was working in a fashionable clothing store, and this woman walked in with a dress she thought she was going to return. Guess again, sweetheart. The dress was a beautiful spaghetti strap, rhinestone number. She broke one of the straps, and I have no idea how you get pit stains on a dress like that. Jillian's dialogue was my response to her. I lied a little. I was no director, but she didn't know that, and it was Saks Fifth Avenue so she didn't put up too much of a fight but damn! the nerve of some people.
Comment from Carol Hillebrenner
This is a very good dialogue. I never once lost my place as Mrs. Dumont had a few facts of life explained to her. Jillian is very brave to refuse to accept the worn clothing Mrs. Dumont was trying to return, and she made very good sense explaining how it damages her business. Very nicely done. Best wishes in the dialogue contest.

Thank you so much for the fantastic review and stars. I'm pleased you enjoyed the dialogue-only aspect of this contest. This is a re-post. It was written some years ago. I'm happy it still resonates.

Hahaha! In this story, justice was served. You did an excellent job creating realistic dialogue that described a problem many stores deal with on a daily basis. Your story progressed to a very satisfying and humorous ending.

"You're lookin' at the supervisor, lady. Now git!"
Well written.
My mother-in-law is the queen of returning items, but she doesn't wear them first. I think it's just her way of having someone to talk to.
Best wishes.

Thank you for the excellent review and stars. The stuff your mother-in-law does is minor b/c she doesn't wear the garments. Fraudsters better beware.

Comment from Debbie D'Arcy
This is so credibly expressed in dialogue and is a very cathartic read when the owner takes the stand she does. The would-be fraudster with money becomes increasingly outmanoeuvred by the tenacity of her opponent. Thus honesty and justice prevail, sending out a strong message. Well done and good luck! Debbie

Good dialogue, very believable, and we can even tell the tone of voice being used by the precision of your clever writing. It's a fine entry for the contest, and I send you my best wishes.

Mrs. Dumont is haughty and believes she can bully a 'mere' employee into doing her unlawful bidding. The other woman is businesslike and does not give in to Mrs. Dumont's bullying tactics. When denied a refund, Mrs. Dumont still tries to exert her superiority over the worker by asking to see her supervisor. Your dialogue is so convincing, I can picture Mrs. Dumont's jaw dropping when Jillian Atwater says, "I am the director of merchandising and owner of this establishment."
Well done.

Thank you for the wonderful review and the five-star rating. I'm glad you enjoyed the back and forth between the two women. Mrs. Dumont won't be back there again.

Thank you for your review and stars. Yes, some people out there feel they can get away with doing things like this, and they are so nasty to their employees. I felt Mrs. Dumont deserved what she got.
Comment from Kirsten Shonle
Hazle was an interesting character. If she was really o rich, why would she return the items? What a greedy person. It makes perfect sense that she could not return items to the store ever again. Jillian was also a great character keeping her cool the whole time. This was a nice back and forth. I enjoyed the read.

Thank you for your review and stars. Some people need to get over on their fellow man. Mrs. Dumont got what she deserved. Unfortunately, this is not the only store where she's done this.
