You had me in stitches with this one. Great story and perfect entry for this contest. My mother hated to throw anything away. Once she made a cake and substituted bacon fat for butter. She figured not adding salt would compensate for the salt from the bacon...I'll let your imagination fill in the gaps with this one. I wish you the best of luck with this contest. I think this is a real contender.

The dialogue flows so well that it is if Betty is in my kitchen and forgot to turn the oven on. The story has good detail and I think I'll go bake a cake now. Good luck with the contest. ann

Very cute. The end result is almost expected yet it is well written for flashed writing. I did enjoy this. Almost sounds like something I would do. Good luck in the contest.

I smiled at the name Betty Crocker - always found her prepacked mixture too sweet.

Good luck in the contest.

"Cooking."
Since this is flash fiction, go for specific words. Cooking is general, suggest "Baking". This is what she is doing, baking a cake.

"Betty, did you turn the oven on?" Her laughter exploded.
"You didn't say-" I slammed down the phone. Staring at the oven, I shook my head. "Oops!"
OK she really needs help!

    Helen,

I was going to use baking but changed it since most people think of Betty Crocker's cook book. Thanks for reviewing and the suggestions. Smiles, Carol

This is an absolute riot. You manage to string the reader along until the very end and as far as I can tell you have not wasted a single word or punctuation mark. Great little story.

I am very lucky that my husband is a fabulous cook, so i don't have to make our meals. I used to be able to cook before we married, but I've forgotten how. I tried to boil eggs for devilled eggs, but I boiled all the innards out of them. The speaker in this story is worse than me. At least I turned the stove on. Nicely done, carol.

Best regards,
sharesy

Very funny piece of writing, and it could very well happen, in some instances. I loved the ending, really gave me a chuckle. A very nice writing prompt.

Great laugh! I can totally relate to Betty! I used to only know how to cook chicken 1 way and pasta 2 ways!
I do love the cookbook though. I like the gaiety of this story. Good luck, TexAnn
