I think I've done that before. This is pretty funny about a novice cook, and as always, this story is amazing how you can come up with one with so few words. I think I'll try the recipe too. Thanks for more good writing.

Carol
your story about Betty Crocker- not the dessert icon - was delightful and funny. I loved it. Thanks for making me smile on this gloomy Thursday in Oklahoma. Excellent writing and characterizations with great dialogue. I have a relative who would burn cereal so I can relate. I loved the lines:
She sighed. "Betty, you have trouble opening the refrigerator."

"You didn't say-" I slammed down the phone. Staring at the oven, I shook my head. "Oops!"
Fabulous writing on this one lady of words. Good luck on the contest. I have a feeling your a damned good cook. My mom is okay but it was my deceased sister, Tchinina, who was a brilliant cook. I'm cook certain things. I used to make pies, cookies, and sopapias from scratch. Since I've been in the wheel chair I designated myself to chopping up and making pasta salads.. . Your friend. . .Melissa.

Good thing modern ovens turn on automatically nowadays as soon as you turn it to the temperature you want. LOL!

I'm curious though if cake turned out, or if it fell?!

No nits or spag jumped out at me. The dialogue was crisp and believable. The story itself was cute and clever.

Good luck in the contest!

    Krugerrand,

I got the idea from my oven which displays 350 all the time unless it is changed...thus a novice might assume it was working.

    Smiles to you, Carol

This is so cute. Unfortunately, I cook every thing from scratch so my oldest son's wives have called me many times. I always assure them they are doing a perfect job.

I remember my first crack at baking ciammon rolls. The baseball team used them for a week. This is very well written with humorous overtones. Good luck in your contest.

Hullo Carol ...

This little story of yours is sure to spread smiles among all your readers. No doubt, some will even be able to say ... "That happened to me once!"
There is just one small change to suggest ...

* You have - You must have forgot something ... this should be - You must have forgotten something ....

Thank you for sharing this with us. I enjoyed it and, as it is a Contest entry, I wish you well.
With love from ..... Nanette Mary.

Yes, that would do it - or actually 'not' do it!
Mind, it has got to be fiction because you could not possible fail to notice that the oven is not hot, when you place the cake mixture in it.
Not a cook- by any name.
A good contest entry.

Juliette
