What as wonderful walk down memory lane. My grandmother and my mother always hung their cloth outside on the clothesline. I started out that way but as soon as we could afford a dryer, I was sold on it. I do remember an older lady up the road, who continued to hang her clothes out on the clothesline year round. I would feel a "little" guilty as I watched her but.....not guilty enough to return to those days.

This was a lovely nostalgic look back to simpler times.

Well done.
Blessings
Janet

Thank you Janet. With three kids and a ton of laundry, my wife opted for the dryer also.

    Thanks for reading.

A well written piece. It's funny how things trigger memories of comfort from childhood. This is a good memory of mom and hanging the laundry out.

Very nostalgic write, my friend.

" My mother always hung her wash outside. I can still picture the clothes pin holder she had. It looked like a small apron. It would rip, she'd sew it. If it ripped again she'd sew it again, and again." (Yes)

And:. "She told me every day is new. So new it's nothing like yesterday and no way near tomorrow." (how true)

Great job, John. Bob

Beautiful piece about a beautiful memory. I remember my mom hanging clothes on the line, too. I know how fresh the sheets smelled. Miss that today. THe problem back then was the need to IRON the clothes, since they dried with wrinkles. Ironing was part of the laundry. No longer, due to polyester fibers blended into cottons. Tumble dry, wear. Much simpler. :)

My mother ironed everything (including underwear) but we didn't have the enormous pint of clothes we do today.
    Thank you Phyllis. John

I still like to hang my washing out when I can, weather permitting. But, you are right, you don't see many clothes lines in the gardens anymore. It's a shame, because the smell of wind blown dried clothes is second to none, and sleeping in sheets blown in the fresh air is so lovely. It seems people are too busy to do this any more. Such a shame. I loved your story, my friend, and that little old lady's lesson was one youngsters today could do with learning. :) Sandra xx

My mom had a clothes line. She loved to use it but we all hated it. The birds usually pooped on the clothes and then they would get all stiff. After my nephews were born they wanted to get swing set for them so they had something to play on outside without going to the park. Swing sets nowadays are huge and expensive. The swing set was bigger than mine, yeah I'm a little jealous, but she had to take the clothes line down for the swing set. I don't think I'll ever use one if and when we get a house but they do bring back memories for me as well. Great job

Wonderful story and beautifully written.

I haven't thought about clothesline-hung clothes in a long time. I quit hanging laundry out sometime in the 1970s.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

You gave me reason to reflect on my good old days after reading your story. We all have fond and not so fond memories if we live long enough to reflect.

I think I just OD's on nostalgia. To the best of my memory, my mother gave up the clothes line for a dryer some time in the 50s. In this offering, your grammar and punctuation good, and you tell your story very well. Very well done. Cheers.

You make it sound so nice..like planting a garden, but from my experience clothes from a line stand like stiff soldiers and have the colors of tie -dye where the sun has leeched the brightness. The writing and nostalgia are nice.

Maybe not enough softener or new detergents.
