Once again a lovely sonnet, I truly like the ones of the sea, they make one pause to consider and to discover the depths that lay below the surface. Yes, I meant to say that, and thank you for sharing.

Very lovely writing in this poem. Your well-chosen words create great imagery...one can also smell the salt from the North Sea winds. Excellent flow and great rhythm, rhyme and meter. Nothing to be changed in this well-penned sonnet. Enjoyed this read very much. God bless and hugs, Susanne

Beautiful heroic sonnet, Tony, I like this long form and I like how you indented some of the lines. I really think you might be my favorite poet on this site...and this poem shows why. I can't pick out any lines as the ones I like best, because they are all wonderful. Oh...maybe the volta, where you start with the banshee yell. I do love stormy seas.
Well done!!
Carol

Hi, Tony. again, you impress me so much with your handling of the English language. this sonnet is truly a gem. I liked the entire piece but did not understand some of it, like: " where bar-tailed godwits stand on jointed sticks,"

What is a godwit? LOL

I liked these lines in particular: "heir laden nets of mack'rel, cod and skate
have weathered fearsome storms with mighty waves
when fishermen themselves are tossed as bait
for kraken monsters, deep in briny graves."

Wonderful magic here my friend.

Very many thanks, Bob. Godwits and curlews are both birds quite commonly found on the estuaries and beaches of East Anglia in the winter. I believe that the godwit migrates down from the Arctic.

I suggest you enter that with your author notes. :)

It doesn't matter what the weather is like. A fisherman have to go out to catch their daily quota. There are many mouths to feed each day.

Well, at least I knew one of the words you listed in your notes - schlep. Are you Jewish by any chance?

This is a marvel. The life of a fisherman is very challenging and you did a good job capturing that in your poem.

This is a very unusual scenario, a place, an atmosphere so foreign to me. Yet, so beautiful are your descriptions that I stood by the shore watching these fishing boats slop wallow as they slackened their stays. And I saw the bar tailed godwits standing on jointed sticks in the mud flats. Such exquisite visual imagery. The two halves give a brilliant contrast between the settled mooring and the dangers for both boat and sailor on the high seas in search of the fish. Fantastic language, expert technical devices, and amazing imagery make this one of the best I've read of your work. Just wish this was in a competition. A winner for sure. Beyond that, that well worn phrase 'poetic art' applies.

Hey there Tony
I am Bear Smith I have been absent for some time now due to the effects of Agent Orange on my body, but am back now. I have friends in Alaska who are professional fishermen and this reminds me of their plights. Nicely crafted

What a great accounting of the winter fishing fleet. "The banshee yell of North Sea winds" makes me shiver. You depict realistically the difficult job fisherman have in trying to put food on the table. I enjoyed the different birds described here. Such clever words used as "slop-wallow". Very creative, Tony.
