Very good, nice article or essay Mike, there are more guns in this country than there are people to use them fact over 400 million guns in households and on the streets. we are a country of just about 340 million.

"At his point" should be "At this point".

Essay addresses many concerns regarding guns and the current laws.

However, changing the gun laws may not be enough to help with this situation.

Because:

It is not the gun that walks into a nightclub by itself.

It is not the gun that aims itself at people.

It is not the gun that fires itself.

It is not the gun that murders people.

It is someone holding that gun that does these things.

It is way past time for people to own their actions and these incidents would not occur.

That seems to be the point most people debating this issue overlook, turn a blind eye to, or simply do not want to state.

It is so much easier to blame the gun than the individual who choses to do these vile deeds with a gun.

When the mentality of society changes the occurrences of these incidents will cease.

Hi Mikey.
Phew, that it some statistics going on there. We have very little gun crime in the U.K. In fact we are mortified if we hear of one. It even heads the news and media for days after.
We have very strict laws. You cannot own a gun without a licence and even then you are put through rigorous mental health checks, that are followed up regularly.
I don't really see the need for one. What's wrong with a good old fisty cuff to sort out your gripes.
A really interesting read.

Looking from afar mikey, every time we have a news story as in what's happened in the past week I wonder why do ordinary people need to own guns for protection, why, when these shootings occur do thousands of Americans go out an buy even more guns. Well done for writing and posting this it is a conversation that needs to continue. Good luck with that.

How many deaths in London or any other government that practices gum control. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for a good read.

Hi Mikey, you are one brave man for standing up for what you truly believe in, Unfortunately there are not enough to back your wonderful views my friend, Our country is in a mess but not as much as America at the moment I pray to God for the sake of all those children that the battle is won by the likes of you my friend.

When passion overrules rationale - blindness afflicts;
Where fear drives passion - madness ensues.

In a recent poll 79% of Americans rejected the "inalienable right" of citizens
to own automatic or semi-automatic weapons. Even the industry that
manufactures them admits they "are not terribly effective for hunting or
self-defense, but are more a battle weapon".

What will it take to get through to our elected leaders? How many deaths
will it take to tip the scale to "unacceptable"? There are 307 million people
in America and (not counting semi-automatics - because Congress never renewed the requirement to register them) 317 million known hand guns.

Many a gun owner has quoted me statistics on "lives and property saved"
by citizens holding guns. . .but they are oblivious to the collateral costs of
gun ownership. And very few know the epidemic rates of child deaths
associated with guns.

I fully understand that gun ownership is deeply embedded in the American
iconography and do not hold out any hope of turning that tide, nor will
I engage in discussions about the meaning and implications of a militia - HOWEVER

I am 100% in agreement with your closing point
I condemn the policies in this country contributing to the shootings of 17,499 children per year.

In this, I find a "modern country" behaving like an antiquated feudal state,
and am embarrassed to admit that a minor percentage of our population
(the NRA Organization) is running roughshod over the will of the majority
of the people.

In America, the cavalier attitude we have toward the right to life is a
disgrace.

I can only hope having more people see these statistics will cause
rationale to reign in passion.

Excellent write Michael!

Excellent write, my friend. I'll share the soapbox again with you on this one. Too many people die--a good reason to change things. The availability of guns leads people who otherwise would not to make bad decisions.

I have a personal stake in this argument as I have been threatened with a loaded weapon. It is something you never get over.

A couple years ago, my 33 year old son was living in the upstairs of my house. I can't get up there anyway, so why not. He was a gun owning, card carrying NRA member with 4 guns along with some knives(illegal ones) and other weapons and thousands of rounds of ammo.

One night, he was playing his video game very loudly in the middle of the night. I called upstairs and asked it be turned down. A while later, he came down, drunk and verbally abusive. I just kept on writing and ignored him. He went upstairs, came back down, shoved a loaded Glock in my face and said he was going to kill me because I was a 'fucking bitch'. The gun was loaded, round chambered, and he had 2 full clips (larger than legal size) in his hand. I just kept repeating, "Eric, you don't want to do this--it will ruin your life" over and over. Finally he went back upstairs. I had him arrested, had to testify against him in court. In Iowa, the state prosecutes domestic assault charges whether or not the victim wants to. I have a 5 year no contact order, he is a felon and we will never have a relationship again (I won't consider it because he lied in court and said I made the whole incident up because I was mad at him for not having a job. Had there not been a gun available, none of this would ever have happened. I am definitely anti-gun at this point.

Excellent write, my friend~Debbie

Good on you, Mikey, for having the guts to stand up and state the facts. Your Constitution says you have the right to bear arms to DEFEND yourself. There is something radically wrong if citizens doing their shopping need to defend themselves. Re 'your rights'... we could say, be careful what you wish for, couldn't we? Sometimes the country seems to be heading back to the wild West days, doesn't it? I hope you get some very positive responses to this, good luck, warm hugs, Giddy

Most of the guns are in the hands of a minority of Americans. It all boils down to big money and strong lobbyists. The NRA is even stronger than the tobacco and oil lobbies and they are tough enough to kill and cheat people and get away with it. It disappoints me that enough Americans are stupid enough to believe their scare propaganda about losing their rights. Most of these dummies know nothing else about the constitution. I'll be you'll ruffle a few feathers on this site as well. "Stick by your guns." Opps, no pun intended.
